Enchantment

Modifying Life Itself Is The Most Dangerous & Mysterious Form of Spellcasting

The most unpredictable and therefore most dangerous field of magical study, true Enchantment spellcasting is prohibited from all but the most experienced academic spellsmiths in The Collegiate ArcaneTransfigurationOperating Enchantmentavailableempire

The Enchantment School of Magic represents the "living" half of the alteration magics, while Transfiguration instead represents similar spellcasting intents except without the added complication of ensuring the subject of spell isn't killed before the spell takes effect. Because of this, Enchantment spells carry a great taboo about them - in both the academic world and general public. Rarely - if not ever - practiced by an Imperial Arcanist, Enchantment is perhaps best associated with Primalists, Vamphires, and other uncontrolled magical beings across Alwaus.

Enchantment Magic is typically broken down into two types of spells: Boons and Curses. Boons are Magical Enhancements applied to a being - typically short term - in an attempt to improve the beings ability to fulfill a specific situational utility. Curses on the other hand, are designed to hinder or harm another being by the direct manipulation of their body, mind, or spirit. It is curses cast from Enchantment Magic that draws up the terrible images of swam-hags and blood-witches in the imaginations of smallfolk and it is the boons of Enchantment Magic that the Spellmasters of The Collegiate Arcane so powerfully covet.

Enchantment is one of the least understood of the Magical Disciplines, but both Boons and Curses require a great deal of magical power to overcome a being's natural defences against such magic. Even a willing ally who consents to have the out layer of their skin transformed into stone cannot order their flesh to capitulate to the spell's effect. A body has a natural instinct to fight back against external magic, and the body's natural defences can slow, break, or even worse - corrupt an enchantment spell and turn the resulting effect into a horrific and painful way to die. Experimental Enchantment is very controlled and regulated in [The Eternal Empire and unlicensed practices carry similar penalties to other forms of illegal spellcasting. Bodies will naturally fight against effects long term, and most boons or banes will fade after a few hours in most cases. Powerful Enchanters who either wield immense knowledge and power or have made horrific sacrifices or rituals can often make such effects long-lasting or even permanent.

While The Collegiate Arcane will speak loudly and often about the "unnatural" effects of Enchantment Magic, the truth is that many of Alwaus natural species field some of Enchantment magic through their native biology. Lycean are experts in the transformative powers of Enchantment Magic, while Avion almost certainly use a form of Enchantment Magic in their ability to fly. The Collegiate likely chooses to speak out against Enchantment Magic for the same reason they hold Divination Magic in such little regard. Since it is not something that can be understood or controlled by their arcanists then they will denounce it as dark-magic unfit for imperial subjects. The fact that similar modifications done through the use of Operating Enchantments does not raise objection from the Arcanists only further supports this point. Still, the use of Enchantment Magic being so heavily associated with Vamphires, Bloodwitches, and even Synmatre all give The Collegiate Arcane the grounds they need to keep Enchanters underground and disorganized.

Examples of Enchantment Magic in Effect

Modifying a Creature or Being's Physical Form - Turning a soldier's skin into a thick treebark to turn away an attacker's blade, decreasing an opponent's reaction time to gain the upper hand in a brawl, and vibrating a person's cellular structure at such a frequency to create the effect of invisibility are all example of Enchantment Magic modifying a creature's body.

Modifying a Creature or Being's Mind - Charming a shopkeeper to more amiable to a lower price, erasing the memory of a city guard who caught you escaping a crime scene, and tricking a crowd of people into thinking a dragon is flying high above the village square are all example of Enchament Magic targeting a being's mind.

Transformations - A Lycean transforming from a Wolf to a Man is an example of a powerful transformation enchantment.

Telepathy - A human communicating non-verbally with another human through their mind, a Vamphire dominating the mind of a young woman to do it's bidding, and reading a prisoner's thoughts are all ways in which Enchantment magic can communicate non-verbally.
