The Daeroans
Daeroans are known for their self-determination, being ex-slaves, and airy desert accents. Daeroans value freedom above all else, even to this day, 500 years after their collective imprisonment and slavery.
Naming Traditions
Other names
Daeroans will occasionally take a name relating to their guild, as a middle name.
Culture
Major language groups and dialects
Daeroans speak Imperial Common and Daeroan Elvish, which is a Primordial influenced dialect of Elvish, typically. Daeroans often speak with out differentiating between the z and s sound, as only the "z" sound exists in Daeroan Elvish. Daeroan accents are typically "airy", with lots of dropped consonants.
Culture and cultural heritage
Daeroans hail from the slave-mines of Daero, managed by the ancient Empire. As the slave-mines fell, the people united into one culture, as they struggled to survive the Elemental Chaos battering the island.
Shared customary codes and values
Daeroans are known for being self-deterministic, rebels of passion. They are known for valuing freedom above all else, and viewing many institutions as simply slavery under another name.
Average technological level
The Daeroan people are well-educated in the matters of elementalism and plane travel, and often bring with them their traditions of conjuration and summoning.
Common Etiquette rules
Daeroans are often known to greet each other by slowly spinning in turns, dusting each other ceremonially, ensuring no sand is still on the other. Farewells are to be watched until the leaving party has completely vanished; ensuring that the sky is "open".
Common Dress code
Daeroan outfitting is known for having open sleeves with small metal clasps that hold them together in cooler weather, and can be released whenever. Daeroans are known for wide-brimmed hats with their own clasps that hook into draping fabrics from their clothes.
Art & Architecture
Daeroan painters are considered the best in Khersos; at the cost of being incredibly expensive to commission. When you commission a Daeroan painter, due to their economic system, you commission the entire guild providing dyes, canvas, and other supplies to that painter.
Daeroan architecture includes lots of pergolas and cupolas to help cool buildings, with very steep stone-tiled roofing.
Common Customs, traditions and rituals
A strange Daeroan custom most will not know is that they refuse to eat the organs of any animal; this is due to them being most commonly corrupted by elemental energies, and will be buried instead. If their hunch was correct, it will often blossom into a flower.
Birth & Baptismal Rites
Daeroan birth rites typically involve immersion in water; hot sand; soil; exposure to the sky and wind; and being given a small amount of aether to breathe. It is believed that these imbue the child with a sense for each element; the four traditional ones, and Aether. The order is said to change what the child will grow into; with the first and last being the most impactful. Great leaders are said to be linked to the aether and fire; while great artists are water and earth, for instance.
Coming of Age Rites
The coming of age rite for the average Daeroan happens whenever their master decides they have completed their apprenticeship, at which point they are celebrated throughout the workplace.
Funerary and Memorial customs
Daeroan funerals involve immersing the body in the five elements as was done when the child was born, but inverting the order they had chosen at birth. If one is unsure what order it was done, fire goes last, and the body is fully immolated. After the ceremonial immersions, the body is traditionally entombed in their hometown.
Common Taboos
Claiming authority over another is a major offense in Daeroan society, to which point an apprenticeship and parenthood are the only allowed hierarchical relationships. Being asked to bow before anyone other than your parents or master is considered a major taboo.
Ideals
Beauty Ideals
Daeroan beauty ideals often include proudly displaying scars and wounds of past oppression, mixed with vulnerability and signs of strength, such as muscles next to long, easily-ripped hair. The contrast is what brings joy to a Daeroan; a muscled man chained to a wall, being freed by a whimpering girl with a longsword is one of the most famous images in Daeroan artwork.
Gender Ideals
Daeroans have no particular gender roles; in Daeroan Elvish, gendered pronouns do not even exist.
Courtship Ideals
Daeroan courtship includes providing hand-made gifts to your beloved; the more effort and pride put into the gift the better, even if it is not of any particular worth. The courtship evolves into a working relationship with the two working together.
Relationship Ideals
The ideal relationship in the minds of Daeroans are of equal minds; often the most famous love stories involve the two attempting to one-up each other in their respective fields, and eventually unifying together to create something better.
