Cult of The Void

To usher in the new age, the old must be pulled out by the root. It must be torn asunder and destroyed entirely.

Members of the Cult of The Void channel the power of The Void to absorb and destroy the miasma on the Jalasar continent... often at the detriment of their own bodies. Although the residents of Legacy often give Cult members a wide berth, there is no denying that their abilities and sacrifices are integral to the town's delicate survival.

Bliss in Total Annihilation

The Cult of The Void is founded upon the concept of bliss in total annihilation. Those that truly embrace The Void's power know that they will not have an afterlife. Knowing that they will simply cease to exist is appealing to the type of person who enters and ascends through the Cult. As many of the people in Legacy are down on their luck cast-offs, criminals, and oath-breakers of many varieties... it is not surprising that the Cult's following is large here. They are also integral to Legacy's survival, which attracts another part of the sub-population: those that desperately seek atonement.

Shards of The Void

Those who are chosen and who volunteer may be granted a Shard of The Void, a physical fragment of The Void that grants them access to a small portion of The Void's vast destructive potential, though not without consequence. The Void Maiden is the only individual capable of creating and gifting new Shards. However, Shards that exist can be repurposed, passed from one individual to the next.

Hence, the Cult's underlying religious structure is based upon association with a Shard. Those who serve the Cult, but possess no indirect or direct connection to a Shard are acolytes. Roughly equivalent to a Priest or Priestess is a Void Bearer, who is almost always accompanied by a guard and escort, commonly referred to as the Void Heir. When a Bearer ultimately perishes, their associated Heir bears the Shard, selecting another to serve as their Heir. And so the cycle continues until the Shard is depleted. Among Shard Bearers, authority and responsibility is generally equally shared.
