Session 6 - The Sacred Bond Between Smith and Miner
General Summary
For Breakfast, We go to the Tavern
In the morning, the group converges on Cast-Off's for a modest breakfast. To everyone's surprise, Jin is awake and doing his job. Arkyn ducks into the kitchen to tell Briella that she's doing a great job. Over food, the group discusses the plan... but then get mildly confused. Did Ironborn just want us to find the adamantine or get it back? They decide to go and get clarification from Ironborn. Teagan stands suddenly, declaring "I'm late" before scarfing down food and rushing out the door.
Teagan books it down to the mine entrance where he finds Jeff waiting. As they walk down the tunnel, Teagan asks about Ademar. Jeff doesn't go to Sinner's Choice, but he doesn't seem to have a high opinion of Ademar. Despite sticking to the Pawn shop and the mines, Jeff does have information: Ademar has a bitch on his arm and the healer in his pocket. But, if you're concerned about Ademar, there's a really good cliff that would be perfect for pushing someone off of. Hours later, when they've finished their mining for the morning; Teagan asks if he can take a bit of the odd material. Jeff hands it to him. Hey, do you not get nauseous when you hold this? Jeff responds that, oh no, he does... it's how he knows he still feels anything. Jeff than motions Teagan closer, pointing to the cliffside. What a perfect cliff. You'd just need... a little shove.
Meanwhile, the rest of the group gets clarification from Ironborn: yes, he'd like to have his adamantine returned to him. When informed of the potential suspect, Ironborn does not seem pleased. After assuring Yenush he means no offense, Ironborn states that "Ademar is a snake" who exemplifies all the stereotypes of his race. Ademar wields his debtors against each other in a snowball effect that has amassed him a sizeable amount of influence and control. What do you know about Ademar's relationship with his Aunt? Ironborn responds that all he knows is that she essentially raised him singlehandedly. Perhaps talking to Madame Blythe would be a good idea?
At the theater, Madame Blythe and the production team are a few days out from being ready to put on a performance of a Varoonan play: The Tale of Ambarra (Aiaoue scoffs). Arkyn asks if Madame Blythe has a moment to talk. So we think Ademar may have something to do with a crime relating to adamantine? Delilah suddenly turns and walks away. Yenush pings her response as incredibly odd. Aiaoue notes that her reaction is impulsive and not practiced. When Arkyn mentions Ademar, she almost curls in on herself. When Arkyn mentioned Ademar's association with a crime, she glazed over. When Arkyn approached the conversation again, Delilah didn't seem to recall what happened exactly. Arkyn asks to speak later to which Delilah agreed (and assured him it was not necessary to bring anything).
The casino of Sinner's Choice is relatively quiet during the afternoon hours. Flagging down a bartender, Yenush asks after Ademar. A few minutes after the bartender rings a bell, a Yuan-Ti in a bougie bathrobe lethargically emerges from the back of the establishment. Arkyn gives short introductions including "Nothing is wrong with him" Milo and "Afraid of small spaces" Teagan. As his eyes pass over everyone, they pause on Yenush, who suddenly feels a wave of hatred and vindictiveness rise through him. Ademar, on the other hand, seems to be riding high on excitement as his grin widens, before he settles back into a relaxed, lethargic state. Aiaoue mentions that she "pinged" adamantine in his casino. Ademar seems truthful when he says that he isn't responsible nor did he order one of his goons, but he does definitely know something. He grants them permission to search the premises, strolling among the group the entire time.
Not finding anything in the back rooms, Ademar leads Yenush upstairs while the others return to the main casino floor. Is your arm detachable? Do you have siblings? Ademar clearly seems to have information, but Yenush doesn't take the bait. On the casino floor, Arkyn inquires about Ademar's associates with one of the on-the-floor workers. She mentions that Ademar has "3 waves of muscle": disposable debtors, his big muscle (a man named Syrio), and that bitch. Oh, and sweetie, Ademar is the house. Meanwhile, Aiaoue sits down and decides to pursue her next calling: shuffling cards. She thinks she got the hang of it by the time the investigation ends.
Prior to leaving, Yenush offers his hand for Ademar who takes it. When Yenush clasps his metal arm on top, emotions that are not his own bubble and rise. Hatred boils over. Nows the time. Strike at the snake. Ademar's hand strains and twitches as he reaches shakiily for something with his free hand. His eyes are blown wide. Yenush pulls away and both of them snap out of it as Ademar produces dice in his free hand. Ademar grins: he certainly will be entertained now... as he saunters off.
After some discussion, the group decides to continue their investigation by talking to Viren. Cadence mentions that perhaps "the bitch" (Omarosa) orchestrated the theft. And since her boss is technically Viren, perhaps he could help? On their way to the clinic, Aiaoue is stopped by the young Briella who reveals she has acquired a bunch of apples. As Aiaoue begins to reach for a trinket to give her in trade, Briella asks if instead Aiaoue would help her with something? Her "Gotcha Day" is coming up and she wants to cook a lot for Zix! Would Aiaoue share the recipes she mentioned? Aiaoue agrees and asks what a "Gotcha Day" is. Briella, still very happy, responds that it's the day her parents died and Zix got her!
At the Ohn'Lee clinic, Viren seems to assisting someone with a fracture. He has a moment of panic as he notices the large group that entered, but seems to oddly calm when he sees Aiaoue. She offers him an apple and promises that she has something planned for the rest. Viren's eyes light with a twinkle of happiness. He is quite grateful. Arkyn uses magic to offer healing to the injured man. Viren prefers if people consult with him first, but he's certain Arkyn knows better than he, of course! Shifting to questioning: do you know anything about adamantine? Viren seems to know that it is a metal. Do you know what your sister did last night? Do you know WHO your sister did last night? By the shade of red Viren goes, it is fair to assume that yes, he is aware. Viren mentions that Syrio is a friend of his sister and that he can be found at Kovac's Square with the other blacksmiths. Teagan comments that Viren's parents must have raised him well. Viren goes silent. Yenush and Teagan both slap a hand on his shoulder in "reassurance", thous Viren seems to jolt. He goes beat red as he glances at Yenush and then scurries off.
In Kovac's Square, the blacksmiths are shutting down their forges for the evening. Most of the forges seem optimized to produce smaller bits and pieces to support Legacy. One shop, however, features a massive, ornate blade hung on display. In that same shop is a large genasi man dressed relatively well beneath his smithing equipment. Milo would really like everyone to be on their best behavior in case they need pretty weapons down the road. Syrio is a bit hard to read between his lack of speech, vague hand gestures, and composed, blank face. Would those going out into the miasma have need of adamantine weapons? Syrio shrugs. Do you know anyone who would want adamantine? Syrio motions to all of the smiths. Yenush asks about the weapon and Syrio offers it. The sword bears the signs of someone with great skill working with "lesser" materials. When asked why he was here and where he learned, Syrio signed that he "fucked up" and stated that he learned in Parvathi'Lahn. He seemed to wince after signing and speaking.
Cadence then presents the odd bone-metal. Do you know what this is or what to do with it? Syrio holds out a hand. You'll give it back right? Syrio nods. He inspects the bone-metal, reacting how everyone else he held it did (except Cadence). He does hand it back. When Teagan mentioned that he could acquire more for Syrio to work with, the genasi seemed intrigued. He motioned for Teagan to follow him to the back. Once in the back, Syrio digs beneath a floor board to procure a jingling bag... of adamantine. Syrio offers him half and gestures to indicate "half now, half later". Syrio gestures for Teagan to keep everything quiet. But what about my companions? Syrio motions to Teagan's pockets. As the group leaves, Syrio is wearing boots and would be of the right size to match those footprints.
Teagan books it down to the mine entrance where he finds Jeff waiting. As they walk down the tunnel, Teagan asks about Ademar. For Lunch, We go to... the Tavern
Recovening at the tavern for lunch, Yenush realizes he'll have to work when he sees Jinoah asleep at the bar. Teagan passes around the weird bone-metal. Yenush doesn't feel anything when he holds it in his left hand, but does feel the odd nausea when he holds it in his right hand. Cadence seems... fine with it. It's almost pleasant. The wave of uncertainty is of no concern for Cadence knows... though she's not sure what she knows. The group discusses how to approach the Ademar situation. Teagan mentions that Jeff suggested they murder him. Maybe they should try and talk to Viren? Or perhaps talk to "the bitch"? As they sort out their plan a... plan b... and so on, Yenush decides to get an hour long fiddle lesson from Bryant. The old classic: the Abishai went down to Varoona. The casino of Sinner's Choice is relatively quiet during the afternoon hours. Flagging down a bartender, Yenush asks after Ademar. As the group leaves, Syrio is wearing boots and would be of the right size to match those footprints.
For Dinner... We go to... the Tavern.
Cadence steps to the side to Detect Magic on the weird bone-metal. It comes back with enchantment and a sense of something divine... and old. Beyond that, she can't seem to get anything else. Teagan informs the rest of the group that Syrio gave him a "tip" about where the adamantine might be. He did? Yes, you know... it's the sacred bond between provider and craftsman! Teagan tries to skirt off, but then cracks as everyone insists on going with him. Arkyn eventually ducks out midway through Teagan's half disguised meltdown to head toward the fields.
Teagan leads the rest of the group towards Eight's door. It's HERE, just look around! When the group is distracted, Teagan does a terrible job of shoving the adamantine in his pockets into the hole he just dug. As Teagan proudly declares the discovery of the adamantine, the door opens to reveal Mistress Eight. Is there a reason you are digging in my garden? Her attention quickly turns to Aiaoue: do you have a moment? Clutching her apples close, Aiaoue enters.
Typically, Eight specializes in two major things: blood magic and jewelry. Although Aiaoue does not have her husband's blood, if she has a token with a hint of his essence, Eight may still be able to help. Eight gleams very little from the first item and then Aiaoue offers her kingfisher whistle. After a moment of focus, Eight states that there is not just a trace of essence here... but the entirety of an essence bound to this token. Eight describes the situation as an "out-of-body" experience; her husband suffers from a "missing soul". Aiaoue asks if her husband is okay; is it distressing in there? Eight responds that while most of him is tethered to the item, a bit is tethered to Aiaoue. You seem to share a great love; Eight is certain that he must take comfort in being connected to Aiaoue, even if that is hard to see. The situation reminds Eight of the kalashtar ability to hold a "second soul". Whetever being is interfereing here... perhaps it is attempting mimic the kalashtar's ability.
Upon mention of the blood network, Aiaoue asked if anyone in the network would know anything about a black sun. Eight thought for a moment and promised to reach out to Nana Nine when she is able. As she goes to leave, Aiaoue gives Eight a small side hug to which Eight hesitantly returns.
Arkyn, after a bit of searching, finds Sayah and her trio of birds atop the large barn roof in the center of the fields. She has reclined with a small plate of snakes. Arkyn climbs up to ask how are you? Small talk for a big man? Sure, Sayah is fine. Arkyn mentioned that he hasn't had the best day, but doesn't think Sayah wants to hear about it (that is correct). Arkyn then asks about when they first met... after the miasma. Sayah is quick to dismiss it as a "fluke of the miasma" and nothing more. Arkyn then mentions that he needs to touch someone with emotions and since Sayah offered and said something about experience, he thought... Sayah takes a moment to process and eventually arrives only at confusion. What are you asking me, here? She does, eventually, hold out a hand. Upon taking her hand, Arkyn feels a massive surge of annoyance rising. How dare she come yet again demanding more of the gems of his lands for meager price... all in the name of amassing her fortune. Sayah, however, seems emboldened and has the big shit-eating grin on her face. She pulls Arkyn forward and kisses him... and Arkyn feels compelled to push her off the roof. Before he can, Sayah sidesteps, catching Arkyn as he goes to fall. No longer touching, Arkyn's annoyance fades as Sayah stands there. Quietly, she states that they should not see one another again, before darting off with her birds.
The group once again reconvenes at the tavern. Yenush and Arkyn talk about what happened with Sayah. The others discuss a glorious plan about how to resolve the adamantine issue. Teagan thinks Cadence would like the mines since they're dark, so why don't they go there? Tell Jeff you want to do some overtime to make up for being late and we'll just get more of the bone-metal! Speaking of the material, Cadence asks Teagan if he can break off a small piece. Teagan tries twice and on the second attempt, his warhammer gets wedged in the metal. For a moment, he feels as if he's drowning and feels three spikes pierce through his abdomen... before he snaps back to. Yeah, Cadence, I don't think I'm going to be able to split this for you.
At the pawn shop, the entire group meets Jeff... who walks downstairs in a sleeping robe and his hair wet and straight. Teagan mentions going to the mines to make up for the mixed work. Jeff seems suspicious, but eventually grabs his pickaxe and exits the pawn shop by walking through Teagan's legs even as he tried to protest. Arkyn falls in stride with Jeff as they walk. Arkyn mentioned kissing someone and almost pushing them off the cliff. Jeff grabs him by the shoulder and informs him that it is man's nature to desire to kill. Jeff then leads them to the arcane lift where the aarakocra stands very close to the edge and stares down. So, Jeff, what the guy do to make you kill him? What matters is what he's doing now... feeding the worms.
Jeff leads the group to the mines, but halfway down the mine shaft he stops. Why do you really want to work overtime? Teagan insists that he just wants to help the people. In the darkness, Jeff squints. In Elios, there is a material called Villám. The featherless always craved it. Overstepped and caused problems. Now there's a featherless at the bottom of a mine shaft. With a sigh, Jeff begins to move out of the mines: "have at it". Aiaoue catches up to him. Do all aarakocra feel that way? Jeff mentions that the northern islands have been spared the conflict between the featherless and feathered along the border of the Anwar-Dai. However, there was a time where Jeff did not feel such hostility (as he fiddles with his ring). When Aiaoue asked about a black sun, Jeff thought for a moment. There was an angry aarakocra Jeff once vaguely knew who sought to "blot out the sun" in a rage. The aarakocra Jeff describes is familiar to Aiaoue. His name was Icteron.
Teagan feels insanely guilty and decides they shouldn't mine and take the bone-metal. Cadence wonders if they should just ask Ironborn? Wouldn't it make sense to trade a small portion of a material he can get more of in a day to get back the adamantine that might take weeks or months to arrive? We can just negotiate a deal with Ironborn and Syrio! Agreeing with the plan, the groups rests.

One Day There will be Fish Here... but for now, Quill
In the morning, Aiaoue goes down to the beach and blows on her whistle. The single note echoes over the small bay. Teagan joins her, intending to take another stab at fishing. Just like last time, he feels something tugging on the end of the line. After a brief struggle, Aiaoue watches as Teagan goes crashing into the water... where he finds a grinning Quill, out for his morning swim once again. Do you just do this all the time for fun? Yeah, man, it's my morning swim; I like swimming. As Quill hauls himself out of the water, Aiaoue notes he is from Caliban and that she knows one other person from there. Ah, yes, Cadence right? Shan't make fun of Caliban again in front of her!
Teagan, now also out of the water, blatantly asks what the heck Quill even does around here. Quill shrugs: he helps with the shipyard; he's pretty strong. Oh yeah? How about we arm wrestle then. Quill accepts and Teagan rages... and feels spectral hands dig into his own. Seconds into arm wrestling, Teagan suddenly punches Quill straight on, sending the "tiefling" staggering back. After a moment, Quill's form is covered with ripples of lighting and thunder echoes around him. When he looks up, his eyes are sparking.
