Lieutenant of the Imperial Army

Qualifications

People who have had graduated military command and have spent a total of at least five years in the Imperial Army can apply to become Lieutenants if the position is available.

Requirements

Lieutenants have to be Gratic humans of a sufficient age and experience, and most of them performed above-average in command school.

Appointment

A Lieutenant is given a fortress, tower, or encampment to command if he satisfies the requirements of the position. Once he arrives, there is a short feast and a "first role-call" the following morning attended by the General of the Imperial Army if at all possible.

Duties

The work of the Lieutenant mostly appears strict and authoritarian at first glance, but there is a moral component to the role as well:
  • keeping up the morale, discipline, and cheer of his men; and
  • providing aid to other Captains and Lieutenants to ensure the smooth running of the Army.
  • Responsibilities

    Hard-working individuals and good commanders make good Lieutenants, as their work is nearly never done:
  • keeping in contact with local Captains, Lieutenants, and the General to prevent costly mistakes;
  • ordering food, drink, and pay to the soldiers under his or her command;
  • dispensing martial justice as needed and fairly; and
  • when necessary, subcontract out smaller tasks and problems to hired mercenaries.
  • Benefits

    A Lieutenant makes significantly better pay than the average soldier, and often gets the best food and drink of the unit. He or she will also be able to influence the person who becomes General of the Imperial Army if not themselves.

    Accoutrements & Equipment

    A Lieutenant has slightly fancier and more ornamental armour than the average soldier, with gilded armour and a fancy plumed helmet being the standard dress.

    Grounds for Removal/Dismissal

    Like other military positions, the Lieutenant can be forced out of the military if he is convicted of insubordination or treason. The General is the usual judge of such cases.

    History

    From the construction of The Storied Stone Tower fortress in 40 I until the present day, Lieutenants have always been the best and brightest of the Imperial Army and have always found themselves in the front lines of the wars of The Gratic Empire.
