General of the Imperial Army
Qualifications
A General of the Imperial Army - and there is only one such role - has to have served in the military for a minimum of fifteen years, with at least five of those years having been spent as a Captain of the Imperial Army/Imperial Navy or a Lieutenant of the Imperial Army. Because of the latter qualification, the candidate for General has to have attended command school and be literate.
Requirements
Humans are the only race on Endaman permitted to be Generals of the Imperial Army, and there is a significant tendency for those individuals to of higher-class families with a military history stretching back generations.
Appointment
The appointment of a General is a significant process, although an "interim General" can exist in times of crisis. Candidates for the position are determined by the various Captains and Lieutenants of the Army, which are then sent to the Emperor for final choice and approval. A newly-made General then participates in a ceremony whereby he gives his first order as General. Following this ceremony, there is feasting and some revelry.
Duties
A General has a number of moral duties, including:
being the public face of the Imperial Army's high command, especially at festivals and during war;
promoting and protecting the interests of the Imperial Army in political circles; and
upholding the discipline and rigidity that is central to the smooth operation of the Army.
Responsibilities
Generals have a large number of tasks, including the following:
providing orders to the various Captains and Lieutenants scattered across The Gratic Empire;
conducting training with the main garrison stationed in Gratic City;
forming strategies with his various tacticians; and
organizing and preparing any logistics required for new offences or defences.
Benefits
The General is of a very high rank in the Empire, and so he has many benefits that come with his position. Like all other officers, he has a significant increase in salary, paid for by imperial taxation. He also has a lot of political influence, as well as a seat on the Imperial Council. A manor is also provided for his use whenever he is in the capital.
Accoutrements & Equipment
Whatever weapons and armour owned by the new General are replaced with the ancestral armour and sword of the position. The sword is enchanted and named Delikant, and the armour is a set of plate mail with a special gilded trim.
Grounds for Removal/Dismissal
Dismissal and discharge of a General is very rare indeed, but such a things can happen, and the Emperor must be the one to request it.
History
Following the Struggle of Dzaklak in 23 I , Emperor Artus II planned and gave Geort Plódages, his trusted military advisor, this role, with the details of the Imperial Army structure being finalized in 27 I . Since that time, the Generals have been the strong right arm of the Emperor or Empress, protecting the Empire from external threats and expanding its size to cover much of the continent of Endaman.
Cultural Significance
As the centre of imperial culture, the Imperial Army, under its current General, is a key part of Gratic society.
