Captain of the Imperial Army/Imperial Navy
Qualifications
Those wishing to become Captains of the Imperial Army or the Imperial Navy need to have at least five years of experience in the military to be accepted into military command school and they have to pass command school in order to become Captains.
Requirements
Those whose grades in command schools are passable but not exceptional tend to become Captains. Also, only humans can go to command school in The Gratic Empire.
Appointment
Each Captain is assigned a city, town, or village to command the forces of if they satisfy the requirements of the position. Once they arrives, there is a short feast and a "first role-call" the following morning attended by the General of the Imperial Army if at all possible.
Duties
A Captain of the Imperial Army and a Captain of the Imperial Navy have very similar duties to their men and their town or village:
keeping up the morale and cheer of their men;
provide the strength and discipline necessary for the correct operation of their organization; and
be a beacon of peace and protection to those citizens in their charge.
Captains of the Imperial Army are also equipped to deal with legal issues in their town or city and are required to adjudicate on small issues.
Responsibilities
A Captain has an obligation to protect their settlement, and in pursuing that goal they have some responsibilities:
keeping in contact with the General or Admiral, depending on their organization, as well as with other Captains and Lieutenants of both organizations;
enforce the rule of law and the collection of taxes in their settlement; and
when needed, dole out tasks and assignments to mercenary groups and adventuring parties.
Benefits
A Captain makes significantly better pay than the average soldier, and often gets the best food and drink of the unit. He or she will also be able to influence the person who becomes General of the Imperial Army if it is not themselves.
Accoutrements & Equipment
A Captain has slightly fancier and more ornamental armour than the average soldier, with gilded armour and a fancy plumed helmet being the standard dress.
Grounds for Removal/Dismissal
Like other military positions, the Captain can be forced out of the military if they are convicted of insubordination or treason. The General is the usual judge of such cases in the Imperial Army, while the Admiral adjudicates similar cases for Captains of the Imperial Navy.
Cultural Significance
The ability of a Captain to keep the peace in the Empire is a huge factor in how the local people react to the Empire, sometimes more than their local Lord Magistrate of the Gratic Empire or Lord Mayor of the Gratic Empire.

Capmen (a play on words with the name for Lieutenants, "campmen")
Equates to
Captain of the Imperial Army and Captain of the Imperial Navy are equivalent positions, and both are very similar to the rank of Lieutenant of the Imperial Army.
Length of Term
A Captain - unless they are dismissed from their duties, resign, or die - serves for life.
