Parin Rédagal

As you ask why there is no scribe at the guardhouse, the boisterous guards suddenly become somber. You can feel a current of mourning pass through the thick silence before the captain answers.   "Parin died rather recently, I'm afraid." he replies in a quieter tone than you would expect from a military captain. "The investigation into his death is still ongoing, so I can't give many details."

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Parin was a gangly young man, with an outburst of pimples on his face and pasty skin. He wore his hair long, all of it brown except for a small blond streak in the back.

Body Features

He had very pasty skin, a product of his long hours inside libraries and bookstores. He wasn't physically strong at all, appearing long and gangly.

Facial Features

His face was a mass of pimples due to his anxiety. His nose was surprisingly short.

Identifying Characteristics

He had a streak of hair that went blond at some point, which stands out in his otherwise brown hair.

Physical quirks

He often walked on his tiptoes, trying not to make a sound.

Apparel & Accessories

His clothing of choice was a dark red tunic and orange trousers. He wore no jewelry aside from a bronze bracelet that he got from Darantus.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Parin was born into a poor mining family in Anotaash, and as a child, he spent much of his time learning to read at the local Magistrate's library. He was a voracious reader, and it was during this time that he caught the eye of Darantus Slénami, then a young mage. As Darantus needed a scribe to help him transcribe some lectures, he brought the then-fourteen Parin with him to The College of Mages in Gratic City. When Darantus's time at the College was complete, he brought Parin with him to Freebrook, where Darantus set him up as a scribe to the local army barracks. Then Parin got murdered.   It was discovered about a month later that Parin had been poisoned by Darúkk Zaymil, as the latter was a member of The Nine Daggers.

Education

  • He learned a lot about the world through books, including how to read and write.
  • He attended lectures at the College of Mages, but never really understood much of it.
  • Employment

  • Parin only ever worked in writing, transcribing speeches and lectures.
  • Intellectual Characteristics

He was very much a self-driven person, and he believed he could do anything if he worked hard enough for it. His brain was very well versed in logic.

    Morality & Philosophy

He tried to keep his head down and not get in people's ways, feeling himself a burden to many people around him. While this may have served him well as a scholar, it did not endear him to most people.

    Personality Characteristics

    Motivation

He planned to become a librarian at the old library where he spent his childhood, but he never got to go back there.

    Savvies & Ineptitudes

  • If it had anything to do with books, he would have known it. He learned multiple languages and was knowledgeable in alchemy, history, magical theory (although he could do no magic himself), and religion in particular.
  • Likes & Dislikes

  • He greatly enjoyed reading, often spending long days with a good novel or text.
  • He was not partial to physical labour, trying to find someone to do those tasks for him.
  • Virtues & Personality perks

  • People tend to remark on his kindness to people particularly if that person was also of a scholarly background.
  • Others in the taverns would call him a regular there, where he would tip well and often.
  • Vices & Personality flaws

  • His anxiety made it difficult for him to make new friends.
  • He was fond of secrets, liking to withhold information that would embarrass or incriminate him.
  • Personality Quirks

  • He had a bout of shaking from time to time due to an uncured disease from his childhood.
  • Hygiene

He was always a clean individual, trying to not draw attention to himself in that way. He was very clean shaven, although he didn't wash his face often.

    Social

    Contacts & Relations

He knew a couple of Darantus's friends from his College days, although he wasn't really on speaking terms with them. He was also well-loved by many of the guards, helping them with the byzantine bureaucracy of The Imperial Army.

    Family Ties

His parents is still in Pars-thorp, a pair of animal herders. He had two sisters and a brother, with the former now wives to other farmers and the latter in the army.

    Religious Views

He was a fervent temple-goer, being there the regular four times a week. He kept a selection of tomes at his residence on theology, and he truly believed in the the power of religion.

    Social Aptitude

He was rather shy, trying to stay out of the spotlight. This was mostly due to his lack of confidence earned through a long life of only communicating through writing. He was very polite, sometimes to a fault.

    Hobbies & Pets

  • He was a voracious reader in his spare time, keeping a small library at his place and gathering them from travellers after work.
  • Wealth & Financial state

He was paid well by the government for his services, so he had a reasonably nice house, since sold by Darantus to Darúkk Zaymil. He left a significant sum to his friend and confidante.
