Arwa (ˈarwa)

Arwa is the third largest island in the Telmun Islands, and was the birthplace of the legendary Hundaru of Telmun. The largest city on the island is the port of Bit Husabi, which was capital of the Telmunic Empire during Hundaru's lifetime. The Empire moved its capital to Mina Hunda on the larger island of Menâme shortly after the ascension of Tylos of Nisi.

Arwa is the richest of the Telmun Islands, due to the proximity to Kūr Inū, a coral reef known for the excellent pearl beds. Before the discovery of the pearl beds near Kendari, Kūr Inū was considered the best source of pearls in the world. Arwa also dominated both fishing and trade in the Telmun Islands, and the port of Bit Husabi on the northwestern coast is still the busiest harbor in the archipelago.

Notable Spirits

The people of Arwa honor Ninzikla, goddess of the seas surrounding the Telmun islands, and also two of her children, named Lugade and Ninsir. Lugade is the lord of the deep waters, and the patron of the Kūr Inū. He is wed to Ninĝauga who rules over the land of the dead, and the spirits of the dead must pass through his domain to enter the underworld beneath the ocean floor. Ninsir is the god of Arwa itself, and patron to sailors and sailing ships. Ninsir commands an army of Lilugigi, spirits of the wind. The Lilugigi are mischevious and sometimes destructive, but are obedient to Ninsir. Those who please the god may find an Lilugigi assigned to aid their ships, giving them helping winds whenever they are needed.

Geography

Arwa is shaped like a horseshoe, with the Bay of Bit Husabi indenting the northwestern coast. The reef of Kūr Inū is off the northern coast of the island, and the lighthouse of Bit Nasir is there to warn ships away from the reef and help guide them to the bay.
