Roseham (ˈroːzəham)
Roseham is the largest settlement on Eotland, and is the seat of the Rose Cynn, the wealthiest of all the Eot cynns. It is the best port in Eotland, and is the first major port of call for ships coming from the north into the Volksland.
Roseham is located on the western coast of the main island of Eotland, at the mouth of the Rosenflod. The Rose Cynn have built flood walls along the banks of the Rosenflod that keep all but the worst floods from spilling out into the town. Additionally, many of the buildings have elevated foundations that are designed to be flooded without damage to the building. During heavy flooding, the streets of Roseham become canals, and people pole or row boats from place to place.
Demographics
Roseham is a majority human town, with almost all the permanent residents of the Eot ethnicity. The second largest group in the city are the Eyjamaður who migrated from Eyjaskeggjaheim. There is a Dòbhran Selkie bachelor group that fishes the waters near Eotland who come to trade in Roseham, but no other nonhumans are common.
Government
Like most Eot communities, Roseham is governed by a Þing which has representatives from each of the cynns that live in the town and surrounding area. The Þing is led by the King of Roseham, who is chosen by the Þing and serves for life. The King has near absolute authority in day-to-day matters, although he can be overruled by a majority vote in the Þing. The King is assisted by a small group of counselors who provide advice and to whom the King can delegate tasks. The current king is Sigurd Rosenhart, of the Rose Cynn, and has served in that position for nine years.
Districts
There are several districts in Roseham. The richest is Hafnviertel, which overlooks the harbor. Here is found the Þinghaus, where Roseham's Þing meets to decide upon the laws of Roseham. On the edge of Hafnviertel and Altham is found the Seefahrer Taverne, a popular place for those sailors who can afford it.
Altham is the oldest part of Roseham, and runs along the northern banks of the Rosenflod. It was once residential, but now is mostly warehouses and taverns, along with the occasional brothel.
On the south side of the Rosenflod are the districts of Stallhof and Marktplatz. Stallhof is mostly stables and smithies, and is where those interested in acquring the one of the famous Eotensteorra horses would go. It borders on the Marktplatz district, where most of the town's commerce is conducted. The Rosenbrücke spans the river here, connecting Marktplatz with Hafnviertel; it is the largest and tallest bridge on Eotland. On the Marktplatz side of the bridge is the Kaufmannshalle, the largest open marketplace in Roseham. The Goldene Krug is also found in Marktplatz; it is an inn known to cater to merchants and to have all the best gossip.
