Crafting

Crafting is the process by which Resources are converted into Weapons, Armor, Potions, and other useful items. Some NPCs can be hired to craft items for a fee or in return for services rendered, but player characters may also engage in Crafting during Downtime, assuming they are proficient with the necessary tools. In order to craft an item themselves, a player must complete the following steps:
  1. One generally cannot craft without a recipe, which is a set of instructions detailing the process for creating a particular item. A recipe will specify which Resources are required and in what quantity, which tools must be used, how long crafting the item will take, and the number an artisan must roll on their Crafting check in order to succeed. Crafting recipes may be purchased from NPCs, discovered while Adventuring, or created through trial-and-error. Known recipes may be accessed at the List of Crafting Recipes.
  2. As noted above, a recipe will specify which Resources are needed to craft the desired item. The artisan must obtain all required materials before they can begin Crafting an item. It is possible to deviate from a recipe and still obtain a useful product by substituting similar materials of the same rarity, though doing so may have unpredictable results.
  3. Every item has a required Crafting time, which may be anywhere from a few hours to several months depending upon its size and complexity. The artisan must spend that time concentrating primarily on their work, and cannot Travel or go Adventuring while they are doing so, although they may engage in other Downtime activities simultaneously if allowed by the GM.
  4. Finally, once the entire Crafting time has elapsed, the artisan must roll a Crafting check using the appropriate set of tools. If their roll meets or exceeds the difficulty provided in their recipe, then they successfully craft the desired item. If it does not, then they must either abandon the process, losing half the materials they have invested, or repeat the Crafting time and re-attempt the check. An artisan who rolls a result of "20" on their crafting check creates a masterwork version of the desired item with superior properties, while one who rolls a result of "1" botches the process so badly that all of the materials invested are lost.

Steps to Crafting an Item:

  1. Acquire a Recipe
  2. Obtain the Necessary Materials
  3. Work for the Required Crafting Time
  4. Roll a Crafting Check
