The Old World

The Old World consists of all lands and oceans which were known to the peoples therein before the World Gate's discovery and between which one may travel without using magical or supernatural means. All parts of the Old World are generally believed in the same plane of existence, but it is unclear whether this is true of The New World as well. While not completely explored, the vast majority of the Old World has been charted and its geography is well known to its inhabitants. It is spherical in shape and consists of five Continents and seven Seas. It is lit by the Old World Sun during the day and by the Old World Moon and Old World Stars at night.

The Old World is home to nine known sentient Races, some of which are capable of cross-breeding with one another, along with thousands of species of non-sentient Animals and Plants. According to legends and historical accounts, it once contained various types of Monsters as well, though all such creatures are now thought to be extinct. The recorded History of the Old World extends thousands of years into the past, though the circumstances of its creation are not known with any degree of certainty. Most scholars presume that one or more Deities created the Old World, but the various Religions practiced by its denizens fail to agree on who its creator or creators might have been.

For most of its existence, the Old World, along with its sun, moon, and stars, were thought to encompass all of creation, but the World Gate's discovery in 1721 PR has proven that assumption incorrect. Initial exploration of the New World indicates that it may be even larger than the Old, and the existence of heretofore undiscovered bodies in its heavens suggest that it may exist within an entirely separate universe. The resemblance of the New World's flora and fauna to those of the Old World (both extant and extinct), however, is considered by many scholars to be proof that the two share a similar origin.
