Personal history
Mahla Rey Nahls is the only daughter of Rey Nahls and a member of the Hytian nobility.
Mahla awoke as Sailor Aesyle as a teenager and was forced to keep this a secret from everyone she knew. Her culture had very strong views about the position of women in its society and thought very lowly of senshi. However, being Sailor Aesyle gave Mahla an outlet she didn't know she needed, allowing her to vent her frustrations.
Of course, this wasn't without its own repercussions. On several occasions when she would sneak out to fulfil her duty, she would return with injuries for her effort. Fortunately, she never suffered anything serious, anything too visible and what she did suffer healed quicker than it would have for a regular human. Returning injured occurred more frequently after Sailor Aesyle met Sailor Eudora. Whilst their first meeting wasn't the best, Mahla quickly realised that the other senshi was much more capable of combating their opponents and eventually swallowed her pride to ask Eudora to train her. There might have also been a small part of her that liked the idea of being able to defend herself, should her family find out about what she was doing.
Unfortunately, after one such training session, she got caught. She was trying to sneak back into her room whilst one of the lowest ranked servants was cleaning. The timing meant that the servant - Nirya Hahl Ahlk - saw her transform back into Mahla from Sailor Aesyle. And whilst there were several ways this could have played out, Mahla convinced Nirya it was in both their best interests for this to remain a secret. Nirya tended to Mahla's wounds and a tentative trust was formed between the pair.
In the months that followed, Nirya transformed into Sailor Hyas and something resembling friendship developed between the pair. Mahla also introduced her to Sailor Eudora, though Nirya was not as keen to learn how to fight.
Mahla was approached by other Atlantean senshi to join the Areto Iphito Academy, as all underage senshi are invited to do so. Mahla declined because she couldn't risk being outed as Sailor Aesyle. She was, however, introduced to Galen, Prince of the Atlantean Empire, whom she befriended.
In the run up to the Burning of Asahla, Mahla's family began to push the idea of her marrying into another family, for political advantage of course. This put a lot of stress on Mahla, who wanted nothing of the sort. Then her city burned and such thoughts were put to one side as they had to rebuild.
Mahla saw this as an opportunity to help rebuild her city into somewhere better than what it had been. But she couldn't do this alone. Nirya had more or less vanished, though sent signs that she was watching. As for Katsa...she'd confessed feelings to Mahla that terrified her and Mahla hadn't responded as kindly as she could have, which resulted in Katsa disappearing off world. So, for the most part, Mahla was alone.
Except for Galen. He was present in what was left as Asahla, representing the Empire. With his help Mahla believed she could change things - he could be her voice in the patriarchal Hytian society. It helped that he was also a fan of the changes she wanted to impose. So he, a little reluctantly, agreed to an engagement of convenience.
And whilst it's slow going, over the following years they do manage to start to bring change to the Hytian as Asahla rises from the ashes. Eventually they have a wedding, which is a big deal because Galen is the son of the Empress after all.
