Limbo

Summary

Limbo holds the purest expression of complete and utter chaos. Everything that swirls about the plane is a cocktail of random occurrences and accidents, where water can transform spontaneously into stone, snow, or acidic secretions at any moment.

The Soup

Soup is the best word to describe the physical properties of Limbo. It has no gravity, though pockets of elemental power move about like ingredients in a stew – thick in some areas, thin in others. Everything in Limbo moves naturally according to an unknown whim, which includes sentient creatures. Regular physical movement against the primordial soup is near impossible. But the will of creatures can be imposed on the area around them, stabilizing matter and pushing back the soup. Movement without mental command is impossible against the unbending will of pure chaos.

Creatures and "Layers"

The slaadi, great toad-like monsters that exist only to feed, and the githzerai are the two primary inhabitants of Limbo. Githzerai are not natives to the plane but were transplanted from their original homes during the uprising against the mind flayers that held them as slaves. When they broke free under the leadership of Gith, two factions split off along ideologically different lines. The githzerai found solace in Limbo, building great monasteries to honor the most powerful teachers of their society, while the savage and bloodthirsty githyanki retreated to The Astral Plane.

Limbo has no defined layers, instead spontaneously growing them as its chaotic whim demands. There are three vaguely defined "layers" - the Storm Eternal, the Sea Infinite, and the Elsewhere, defined largely by their primary inhabitants, but there are no borders between the three regions, and no creature or native inhabitant refers to their names. Limbo is characterized by its lack of direction, which makes maps and directions pointless. However, planar scholars have classified the plane into the three regions, with the Storm Eternal being defined by the home of the githzerai and their various monasteries and fortress cities.

The Sea Infinite is another region of Limbo, defined by its chaotic, ever-changing seascape. This region is primarily inhabited by the slaadi, who protect their Spawning Stone from intruders. This area is populated with strange creatures, including the massive octopus-like Kleeltarns, the winged and web-footed Flavabeeks, and the proto-ooze, the purest expression of chaos amongst the creatures that inhabit Limbo.

Elsewhere is the third vaguely defined "layer" of Limbo, and it encompasses everything that is not part of the Storm Eternal or the Sea Infinite. As its name suggests, Elsewhere is a vast and amorphous space that defies categorization. Its inhabitants are just as diverse, ranging from rogue githzerai to strange, self-aware landscapes. Many travelers come to Elsewhere seeking the Font of Reckless Magic, the source of wild magic across the multiverse, or the halls of the College of Chance run by the Seekers of Xaos, which hold great volumes of lore and legend.
