Humans in the Sealands

Humans are the most populous race in at least this part of the world. There are a number of human ethnicities and sub-ethnicities around, but the three most common broad ethnic groups in Malfa and the surrounding area are:

  • Thounen - native to southern Chadun, especially the western coast and the nearer islands. They are comparatively pale-skinned, though still a bit darker than real-world northern Europeans.
  • Hallic peoples - supposedly descendants of the Hallic Empire, after which the Hallic Seas are named, gone for a thousand years or more. They are spread across the western islands, and are rather darker in both skin and hair than Thounen or Bashenner. Given the size and scope of the Hallic Empire, it's very probably the Hallic people make up several different ethnicities, related or otherwise.
  • Bashenner - native to northern Findere, especially on the eastern coast. The largest Bashenner nations are the kingdoms of Urichen and Attaia; the ancient island of Kursatta, once the centre of its own ancient empire, is also home to Bashenner humans (as well as other races). Bashenner are often reddish-brown in complexion, with hair that ranges from auburn to near-black.

All these ethnicities are pretty equally represented wherever you go in The Sealands; many or most communities are some mixture of the three. There's very little connection between ethnicities and nations or polities, even less than with (for instance) the Hewellen or Valni. The most xenophobic state, human or otherwise, would probably have a much more specific vision of Us vs. Them than these broad categories (i.e., "here in this valley" vs "yonder, not in the valley").   In Malfa, the first humans were thralls the Maveren brought over from the eastern seas, so ethnically mostly Bashenner. Later on, the Maveren found new thralls amongst the inland and island populations; as Malfa expanded and prospered, humans started coming to Malfa under their own power, including from other ethnic groups further south in Findere. Very dark or very pale humans are unusual in Malfa, though not unheard of.
