Harmon Tholme

General Harmon Tholme

Harmon Tholme is the head general of Amphail's forces and a personal friend to Lord Dauner Ilzimmer.

History

Harmon Tholme was born in 1443, the fourth son of the minor Tholme family, a vassal of Amphail. Knowing he would never inherit his father's lands, Tholme studied combat in Amphail's relatively meager force. During his time training, Tholme met the future lord of Amphail, Dauner Ilzimmer, and the two became good friends.   In 1471, Tholme married Serene, a priestess of Sune in Amphail.   By 1492, Tholme had become the head the head general of Amphail. In Ches, he was dispatched by Lord Ilzimmer to Salt Lake to put down the peasant uprising that threatened to upend Amphail's agrarian nobility and had already overthrown Baron Artus Goldfinch. Tholme quickly found that the forces of the Plowshare Militia, though less well trained than his own men, outnumbered him, so Tholme opted to try and starve the peasants out with a protracted siege to prevent a bloodbath. His wife, Serene was also in Salt Lake during the uprising, and Tholme was unwilling to get her killed in an attack.   In Tarsakh, the following month, Tholme was under increasing pressure from Lord Ilzimmer to end the siege, as Waterdeep was marching their army out to assist and Ilzimmer didn't want to lose face by needing assistance.

Shortly before the army arrived, Tholme met with the Breadwinners, who arrived to try and end the conflict. Knowing that Mariana Goldfinch would try and enter the besieged town no matter what, Tholme requested that the adventurers find his wife and get her out safely. Later, when the Breadwinners marched to the Temple of Akadi, Tholme required a 14 man escort to match the 14 soldiers of the Plowshare Militia and to ensure that they weren't planning an ambush.   Following the return of the Eye of Akadi, Tholme expressed his displeasure that the Breadwinners neglected to find Serene. Tholme also participated in the negotiations with the the Plowshare Militia, led by Harvest, to try and end the conflict without bloodshed. With the Breadwinners mediation, an agreement was reached and the Plowshare Militia disbanded.   Following the Siege of Salt Lake, Tholme led Amphail's forces in the Great Dragon War, though the meager forces were further divided by a large garrison that needed to stay in Salt Lake. Tholme fought in both the Battle of Hardbuckler and the Battle at the Well of Dragons.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Though he was sympathetic to the treatment of Salt Lake's peasantry, Tholme nevertheless firmly believed in the nobility's right to rule. However, he was personally opposed to senseless bloodshed, due to both personal belief and an acknowledgement of how small Amphail's forces are when compared to the other members of the Lord's Alliance.
