Bitter Breath is a wingless horned devil and a
Avernian warlord as the leader of Marauders.
History
Bitter Breath was once a pit fiend known as L'Zeth that served under
Archduke Zariel of
Avernus early in her reign. However, L'Zeth was allied with
Bel, the former archduke that Zariel supplanted, and schemed with the
archdevil to overthrow Zariel. His schemes were discovered, however, and he was cursed by Zariel, first being demoted to a horned devil and then again by having his wings striken and being made unable to create contracts, as his voice would only come out as wordless smoke.
L'Zeth, now known as Bitter Breath, left the service of the
Blood Legions, and though all other devils were forbidden to work with him, Bitter Breath allied himself with a group of
hobgoblins stranded in Avernus, becoming their leader and turning them into a warband.
In the mid-15th century, Bitter Breath and his Marauders attacked a caravan led by the merchant
Mahadi while they were transporting the
hollyphant Lulu to Zariel's
flying fortress. Lulu, left docile and confused through the frequent application of
water from the Styx by Mahadi, managed to escape the attack in the chaos.
In the summer of 1497, Bitter Breath and his warband attempted to attack a group of
abishai outside of
Tiamat's Lair. The attack, however, was a disaster as
Tiamat's forces had been preemptively warned by the rival warlord
Smiler the Defiler. Angered, Bitter Breath joined two other warlords,
Kolasiah and
Algoran in a vengeance pact to kill Smiler. This pact was joined by the
Lost Star Detectives, a group of adventurers attempting to end the
Damnation of Elturel, when Smiler's Marauders met the group investigating a crashed flying fortress.
The Detectives agreed to join the pact in exchange for a
Nirvanan cogbox but failed to show up at the
Bloody Crescent in time for the attack, which ultimately failed, forcing Bitter Breath to again lick his wounds. This time, the members of the vengeance pact turned their ire towards the Detectives and attempted to kill them outside of
Fort Knucklebones in early 1498, which failed and resulted in Algoran's death.
