Scaly Death Tribe

The Scaly Death Tribe is a lizardfolk tribe located in the Mere of Dead Men. It was an ally, and later enemy, of the Cult of the Dragon during the Great Dragon War and historically has been subjugated by the black dragon Voaraghammanthar.   In 1496, its chieftain was Snapjaw.

History

The precise date the Scaly Death Tribe was founded is unknown. However, they were fully established in the mid-1300's, when Voaraghammanthar and his twin, Waervaerendor, established the Mere of Dead Men as their domain. The twin dragons, then believed to be only one, subjugated the Scaly Death Tribe.   In the early 1490's, the Cult of the Dragon began their plot to free Tiamat from her prison in the Nine Hells. Starlin Castro was tasked with creating a base in the the Mere of Dead Men to manage the cult's treasure smuggling operation, to attempt to recruit Voaraghammanthar, and to search for the Gauntlet of the Black Dragon.

Convinced they were assisting their longtime master, the Scaly Death Tribe began assisting the Cult of the Dragon. However, the cult's bullywug allies, led by Pharblex Splattergoo, began abusing and mistreating the lizardfolk after decades of conflict between the two. This culminated in Pharblex killing the tribe's chieftain, Sunmaker.   In Tarsakh of 1492, the adventuring party the Breadwinners entered the Mere of Dead Men to disrupt the cult's activities. There they met Snapjaw, a member of the Scaly Death Tribe, who told the adventurers of his tribe's woes and convinced them to aid him in freeing his clansmen. The Breadwinners assaulted Castle Naerytar and the lizardfolk rose up against their bullywug oppressors.   Following the uprising, Snapjaw was named the new chieftain, and the tribe declared a Bullywug Hunt to celebrate. During the hunt, Pharblex Splattergoo was slain by the Breadwinners and the lizardfolk outsider Bloodfang Wellington.   By Nightal of 1496, the fortunes of the tribe had been reversed. The tribe had been decimated by famine, Yuan-ti raids, and other misfortunes, brought about by Voaraghammanthar taking away the tribe's greatest warriors and shamans. Chieftain Snapjaw again sought aid from outsiders, this time in the form of the Heroes of Saltmarsh, who had arrived to steal The God Trap. The Heroes of Saltmarsh killed Voaraghammanthar and freed the tribes shamans, though they declined to join in the celebratory Bullywug Hunt.
