Voaraghammanthar
Voaraghammanthar was an adult black dragon that lived in the Mere of Dead Men and terrorized Northwest Faerun for centuries.
Unbeknownst to nearly all, "Voaraghammanthar" was actually two seperate twin dragons: Voaraghammanthar and his twin brother Waervaerendor, who collaborated closely together to make it seem as if they could be in multiple places at once.
Voaraghammanthar was killed in Nightal of 1496 by the Heroes of Saltmarsh, who fought the dragon to recover a dwarven artifact of great power in the dragon's possession: the God Trap.
History
Voaraghammanthar was born among a nest of black dragon hatchlings in 1028. Upon hatching Voaraghammanthar and his fellow hatchmate Waervaerendor, shared an empathetic connection that allowed them to work toegether to kill their newborn siblings. The two twin dragons were inseperable, eventually settling in the Mere of Dead Men. As the two grew up, they decided to act as if they were a single dragon, Voaraghammanthar, to catch adventurers, dragon slayers, and would be threats unaware. The two also made a habit of enslaving or forcing the cooperation of lizardfolk and kobold tribes in the swamp to act as guardians and servants for their lairs. In 1373, Waervaerendor, posing as Voaraghammanthar, joined a cabal of dragons in raiding the Arcane Brotherhood's Host Tower in Luskan, stealing a variety of magical items. In the early 15th century, Waervaerendor began suffering from bouts of maddness, causing the dragon to lash out violently, becoming a threat to both himself and his brother. Despite, Voaraghammanthar's best efforts, the fits of maddness only grew worse and worse, increasing in duration and length each time. Fearful that he may have to kill his brother, Voaraghammanthar found a third option. To the north of the mere, the dwarven Clan Velgrund had recently uncovered a powerful and ancient dwarven artifact, a soul trap of immense power that the dwarves called the God Trap with the ability to expel the souls of those trapped inside. Desiring it for himself and his brother, Voaraghammanthar created a temporary lair near the dwarven stronghold, Nettlemurk Hall, in late 1435, phsyically transforming the landscape to become more swamplike with his presence. In Hammer of 1436, the defenses of the stronghold had grown weak enough that Voaraghammanthar made his move, breaking into the stronghold, stealing the God Trap, and killing numerous dwarves along the way, including Riswyn Thunderbane, the artificer who rediscovered the God Trap. Though Voaraghammanthar returned the Mere of Dead Men following his theft, the weaknesses left in the stronghold by his presence were noticed by a splinter faction of orcs from the Kingdom of Many-Arrows, who conquered Nettlemurk Hall six months later, driving Clan Velgund into exile. In 1444, Voaraghammanthar's investment in the God Trap paid off, when he was forced to kill his rampaging brother during his most violent fit of maddness so far. However, using the dwarven artifact, Voaraghammanthar was able to keep his brother's soul on the Material Plane, and he continued to spend the next fifty years looking in vain for a cure to his brother's condition. In the early 1490s, the Cult of the Dragon set up an operation in the Mere of Dead Men in search of the Gauntlet of the Black Dragon as part of their mission to summon Tiamat from the Nine Hells. Voaraghammanthar provided the cult with the use of his enslaved lizardfolk, the Scaly Death Tribe, but remained aloof in directly helping them, unwilling to give up his autonomy. When the Gauntlet of the Black Dragon was found by the Breadwinners in 1492, and specifically bound to Mariana Goldfinch, Voaraghammanthar was intrigued and confronted the adventurers, but ultimately let them go, unwilling to endanger himself by taking the guantlet. In Nightal of 1496, three of the Heroes of Saltmarsh, Mogran Oredelver, Micah Pierce, and Lyra, alongside their ally Immortal Valentine, traveled to Voaraghammanthar's lair to steal the God Trap. Mogran Oredelver, one of the Velgrund Clan exiles and the apprentice of Riswyn Thunderbane, believed that the God Trap could help the Heroes in their quest to end the Banesmark Crisis. On the 16th of Nightal, 1496, the four adventurers released the soul of Waervaerendor, freed shamans of the Scaly Death Tribe, and slew Voaraghammanthar, trapping his soul inside of the God Trap. Voaraghammanthar's soul was then offered to Micah's Patron as a tribute.
