Sea Prince

The Sea Princes, were a self-proclaimed group of pirates that hunted merchant and civilian vessels along the Sea of Swords from 1491 through 1493.

History

The rise of the Sea Princes can be traced to the instability across the Sword Coast North during the Great Dragon War, which prevented the members of the Lords' Alliance from focusing their attention on the pirate nuisance. The Sea Princes were also overwhelmingly based in the Moonshae Isles, far out of the way of most military vessels.   During the hieght of their activity in 1492, a few Sea Princes raided coastal settlements, such as the small town of Saltmarsh.   Following the conclusion of the Great Dragon War, the Lords' Alliance's attention shifted back to the seas, with Neverwinter working particularly hard to kill or drive off the worst of the Princes. Gradually, as Neverwinter's navy grew increasingly bold and members of the Neverwinter Guard were stationed across the coast to prevent raids, the Sea Princes' influence gradually declined, and the remaining pirates turned back to their traditional hunting grounds in the Moonshae isles.

Cultural Significance

The raids of the Sea Princes, and in particular the protection offered by Neverwinter in preventing the raids in late 1492 and 1493, were instrumental in the founding the Neveren Alliance.   The Sea Princes raids also deeply affected the people of Saltmarsh, who were at first happy to welcome the Neverwinter Guard garrison into their town. But as the years went on and the Neverens remained, and in fact grew in influence with the opening of the Saltmarsh Mine, the town's politics became deeply divded between anti-Neveren Traditionalists and pro-Neveren Emberists, derogatorily named after Lord Dagult Neverember.

Notable Holders

Alistair Watereyes, captain of the King's Glory, was a well-known Sea Prince that harrassed the coast of Saltmarsh.   Captain Syrgaul of the Tammeraut was another fearsome Sea Prince that raided the Isle of the Abbey in 1492, unwittingly enslaving himself and his crew to the aboleth S'gothgah. Captain Syrgaul and his ship would later be sunk off the coast of Firewatch Island and ressurcted as undead to kill all the inhabitants of the island and protect a nearby nest of kraken eggs.
