Captain Syrgaul

Captain Syrgaul of the Tammeraut was a notorious Sea Prince who was active in the early 1400s before mysteriously disappearing in the Whalebones.
Unknown to most, Syrgaul became one of the earliest victims of the aboleth S'gothgah, and he and his crew were kept in a state of undeath by the aboleth to guard a nest of kraken eggs, until the captain was finally slain in 1496 by the Heroes of Saltmarsh.

History

Sometime before 1491, Captain Syrgaul gained control over the Tammeraut and its crew. From 1491 to 1492, Syrgaul terroized the northern Sword Coast, attacking merchant and civilian vessels and raising coastal towns, such as Saltmarsh.
In 1492, Captain Syrgaul and his crew raided the Isle of the Abbey, near Neverwinter, ransacking the building and destroying their boats but failing to discover its hidden basement. However, the leader of the abbey's Cult of Bane, Ordurn, had fallen under the sway of an unusually religious aboleth, S'gothgah, as the two of them rediscovered the Banesmark. In order to save the abbey, Ordurn arranged for Syrgaul to fall under the aboleth's telepathic sway. However, S'gothgah betrayed Ordurn, turning him into a skum, and departed with the crew of the Tammeraut under his control.
To the wider world, the Tammeraut seemed to have disappeared, but in reality, S'gothgah was using the crew to explore rumors of the resting grounds and birth places of creatures of great power. This search bore fruit in 1492, when S'gothgah discovered a nest of preserved kraken eggs in the Whalebones, kept from hatching through the use of an elven mythal. Using a mixture of dark magic, the transformative abilities of an aboleth, and the Banesmark, S'gothgah turned the crew of the Tammeraut into aquatic undead creatures, sinking their ship over the nest and using their undead bodies as guards, should S'gothgah desire to return for more eggs.
Syrgaul and his crew remained there underwater until late 1496, when the young noblewoman Krisella Ferox, following a lead for the wizard Keledek, sought the resting ground of the Tammeraut to uncover S'gothgah's plans for the Banesmark. Fearful of the kraken nest being discovered, S'gothgah sent Syrgaul and his crew to kill Krisella, pursuing her across the Whalebones until they beseiged her hiding place on Firewatch Island in Uktar of 1496. However, Krisella was rescued by the Heroes of Saltmarsh, and the group slew most of the Tammeraut's crew and then discovered the kraken nest they were guarding, destorying the remaining eggs and Syrgaul himself.
