Smiler the Defiler is an insane
eladrin warlord of
Avernus, infamous for his antics that often put him at the receiving end of other warlords' ire.
History
Smiler arrived in Avernus in the 1420s from the
Feywild with a group of other travelers. However, his companions abandoned Smiler there, which didn't deter the eladrin, who formed a small warband called Smiler's Defilers to keep himself alive.
Over the next several decades, Smiler gained a reputation for both his obnoxious, often deadly antics combined with an unnatural ability to slip away from most fights unscathed. Smiler also ceased to be found without his distinctive sword that he often spoke to.
In 1492, Smiler's antics became too much for three warlords:
Algoran,
Bitter Breath, and
Kolasiah. Alogran's recent actions, such as getting members of Bitter Breath's Marauders captured by
Tiamat, had become too much for the three, who joined a vengeance pact to kill the meddlesome eladrin. This pact was later joined by the
Lost Star Detectives, who offered their aid in exchange for a
Nirvanan cogbox and who had their own unfavorable interaction with Smiler, who taunted and urinated on a few of them.
However, the Lost Star Detectives were late to the rendezvous to confront Smiler at the
Bloody Crescent, and the three warbands were driven off. When the Detectives did arrive, Smiler revealed that he had tipped their location off to Tiamat's forces, who wanted to recapture the
githyanki dzarya. As the Detectives fled from
abishai and a
red dragon, Smiler easily slipped away.
