Protector
Background
The Protector is the one true god for the Religion of The Towns and is sometimes referred to as The Patron or The Authority.
The religion itself doesn't have a name but is referred to by the Nomads as "the religion of the Townsfolk" or "the religion of one god", as it is mostly monotheistic. The 'mostly' comes from the fact that while they only recognise one god, they talk openly about other powers which affect the world and those who live in it. These other powers are broken up into two distinct groups; The Forces and The Angels.
A Protector
Appearance
He is pictured as an older man who is all-seeing and all-knowing.
The Protector always appears as a man, normally aged anywhere between fifty and seventy years old. He is generally depicted wearing knicked silver armour with large muscles and a fierce expression. His eyes are always open wide, to show that he is all-seeing, and his age is thought to be connected to presenting him as all-knowing.
Personality
He is often judgemental, sometimes vengeful and in constant battle.
As a warrior, The Protector is effectively the judge, jury and executioner. As he is in constant battle with The Forces he is decisive and is quick to anger so is not someone to get on the wrong side of. His judgemental and vengeful nature comes across in many lectures, sermons and stories shared by Clerics as a warning to those who might suffer his wrath.
History
There are many stories throughout Word of The Protector which talk of The Protector at one point being a mortal, who was killed by his lover who had been possessed by The Forces. In death, he grew stronger and became the one true god.
Then came the Great Battle, during which The Protector used the First Blade to battle The Forces. There are contradictory reports of how the Great Battle ended, but what is clear is that it led to the ongoing battle he is now engaged in.
What an interesting history. I'm curious if he was really once a mortal.
