Erika Flowers

Erika Flowers is a recurring character in The Indigo Chronicles and New Horizons. Erika is the gym leader in Celadon City. A serene and brilliant young botanist, Erika is beloved across Kanto and has become a feminist icon. She specializes in grass-type Pokemon and awards the Rainbow Badge to those who can defeat her in battle.

Character

Erika is serene and elegant, the picture of grace and feminine power. She is poised and possesses a deep strength of both character and will. Her status as a beloved figure is not surprisng to those who meet her; her smile is beguiling, her touch gentle, her laugh melodic. While she seems frail and delicate upon first glance, Erika commands respect from others when she speaks.

She grew up a sheltered life in a proper, traditional upper-class family. She was formally trained in etiquette and the “genteel arts”, such as dance, singing, cooking, and flower arranging. She has a calm and reserved demeanor, and is confident in social situations as well as Pokemon battles. The atmosphere in any room she’s in is usually quiet and peaceful. That, combined with her work with pollens and chemicals has resulted in a tendency to nod off.

Erika is a very intelligent woman. She has a keen mind for business and a natural grasp on plant and nature sciences. She’s made a considerable amount of money from the perfumes she’s created derived from various flowers from around the world (the proceeds of which are donated to charity). She has the charisma to have spearheaded, funded, and led a number of other ventures through the years with the two most successful being the Clean Celadon Initiative and the creation of the National Kanto Garden and Greenhouse center, which serves to educate the public on matters of environmentalism and sustainable gardening. Erika has also started a chain of Pokemon salons, has written a number of books about Pokemon care and others about gardening and others about feminist issues.

An often overlooked fact is that Erika is not only a gym leader and entrepreneur, but also a teacher. In fact, she studied education before becoming a gym leader. She teaches regular classes on Environmental Science and Botany, and also offers classes on etiquette and flower arranging through the gym. She is also a frequent guest-lecturer at the Kanto Trainer’s Academy in Silverthorne Village.

Erika is well-liked but has very few close friends. She sees relationships like flowers in a garden: you can only cultivate and give attention to so many before the garden becomes crowded and they all suffer. Her close friends are mostly other gym leaders, notably Jasmine of Olivine City and Daisy Waterflower of Cerulean City, who has been her friend since childhood. She is fiercely loyal to her friends and works hard to keep up with them and make them happy whenever she can.

She has known Bill Fjord, the mastermind behind the Pokemon Storage System, since she first became a gym leader. While they were friendly with one another for a long time, they never really got close. As of autumn of 2019, however, the two started dating and they have a close relationship despite the distance between them and their respectively busy schedules. They both make time to see one another whenever they can. She loves Bill very deeply, more than she’s felt about anybody else in her life. She has started to let herself imagine a life with Bill. She understands that it’s still too early to really consider that, but she can’t help but daydream sometimes.

Erika is a compassionate and loving person but can also be quite stern. She has expectations of both herself and others, and always expects others to put forward their best efforts without exception. While she is a nurturing soul, she cannot stand those who would blatantly and greedily harm the environment and she cannot abide those who see Pokemon only as tools. While it’s rare to see Erika unleash her anger, such moments also serve as terrifying reminders as to why she is a gym leader.

As a trainer, Erika is just both teacher and mother figure to her Pokemon. She often surprises her opponents with how tough and unrelenting she can be in combat. Many underestimate her, not just due to her appearance and demeanor, but because she specializes in the grass type. She finds any notion that grass type Pokemon are somehow weak or inferior to be nonsense. She doesn’t hold back, using her powerful grass Pokemon to overrun her opponents defenses and tear them down like vines tear down a brick wall over time. She is not cruel or aggressive in battle, however, and she’s a famously gracious sport whether she wins or loses; she offers encouragement and advice to those she defeats, and shows respect and honor to those who defeat her.

Appearance

While she is most famous for her yellow and green kimonos, Erika really only wears this attire when she’s on-duty at the gym, preferring more “business casual” clothes in her day-to-day business.

Trivia

  • Erika is the only known Kanto gym leader to have been a Coordinator before becoming a gym leader.
  • Although she has earned several degrees and is technically a Doctor of Sciences, Erika does not refer to herself as a Doctor outside of professional settings and does not include it most League-related documentation.
  • Erika has a fear of Grimer and noticeably tenses up in the presence of Grimer and similar poison-type Pokemon. Her love of perfume stems from an instinctive reaction for the air around her to be clean, in part as a reaction to her childhood trauma.
