Waterdeep
"Honestly? What in the Tranquiline Halls can't you find in Waterdeep?" Durnan Proprietor of the Yawning Portal
Demographics
In terms of species/races, a mix of all. Morally and economically, there is a disproportionate number of corrupt individuals in the city, and the gap between rich and poor is much wider than elsewhere in Alethkar.
Government
Supposedly run by High Lord Jamoas Ruthar, truly run by a secret group of the Waterdavian elite called the lords of waterdeep. Lord Laeral Silverhand is the current Open Lord of Waterdeep, who acts as the face and voice of the lords.
Defences
Waterdeep doesn't boast much in terms of defenses, being an open port. The sunken hull of an ancient ship prevents large vessels like war ships from entering the port, and there is a wall surrounding the city. However, the city wall is not well maintained in all areas, and has seen recent signs of erosion and wear. Overall, the city doesn't fear an attack, thus does not maintain defences much.
Industry & Trade
Criminal activity and illegally obtained goods are its primary industry and trade respectively.
Guilds and Factions
The Harpers, The Emerald Enclave, The Lords’ Alliance, The Order of the Gauntlet, The Zhentarim, Xanathar's guild
History
Waterdeep was founded in 223 EOS by Prince Ruthar and the first Open Lord of Waterdeep Ahghairon, and it was originally a small port town. However, Veden pirates began using the lax government to trade their stolen goods, which would lead to current day's illegal activities. It wasn't until 903 that criminal activity began to become a booming industry for the city. With the addition of the Yawning Portal tavern in 1050 EOS, even more adventurers, gold, and other activities began pouring into the already corrupt Waterdeep.
