Battle of Dur Themriel
The Battle of Dur Themriel was a major engagement of the Wardens and some Ferelden soldiers against an encroaching Jrid horde.
Many consider it the catalyst for Teyrn Adrian Black's secession from the unified Ferelden and thus the Ferelden Civil War as a whole.
The Conflict
Prelude
When the Jrid appeared en masse at Ferelden's border, the Southernmost point of the Korcari Wilds, King Calenhad Theirin and Warden-Commander Malcolinus Flume decided to send the Wardens in to stop the oncoming Jrid horde. Unaware of their intentions, they could only assume the Jrid wanted war. Their armies marched South to Dur Themriel. Teyrn Adrian Black agreed to mobilize Gwaren's forces and to aid in the protection of the nation.
Battlefield
Dur Themriel was an old Tevinter Imperium-era fortress that had been used in ages past to protect against Chasind invasions. The fortress had been long abandoned due to its out-of-the-way location.
The Engagement
Wardens waited by their defenses as the horde came out of the Korcari Wilds and mounted their attack, upon finding a small and cornered Ferelden force. The Jrid began their charge in earnest, while the Fereldens waited for them to come closer, further luring them in as planned. Once close enough, Warden leaders ordered their archers and ballistas to fire a volley to blunt the Jrid's incoming charge, slowing down many of the creatures. Next, Mabari hounds were unleashed to check the Jrid attack, inflicting further casualties. In that momentary confusion amongst the Jrid ranks as the hounds robbed them of momentum, Warden high-command ordered a counter charge, seizing temporary advantage in this close quarters battle. A vicious melee between the defenders of Dur Themriel and the Jrid forces then ensued.
The fight ended in a complete massacre of the Warden and Ferelden soldiers there, with few survivors (no Wardens) to tell that tale.
Spoiler: Campaign 1
Borivik Tigerhold safely watched the battle unfold from a location near the battlefield. He spotted one of Teyrn Black's highest ranking lieutenants retreating from the battle before the final charge could begin. He reasoned about that if those Gwaren soldiers had stayed, the Wardens may have won.
It was later found out that the lieutenant had been murdered and his body dumped in a sewer months before this battle could even occur. Borivik suspected that their must have been an imposter in Black's ranks.
