Inquisition

"Into darkness, unafraid."
— Old Inquisition motto
The Inquisition was a group of people who, seeing the world plunged into chaos following the First Exalted March, rose up to defend Thedas from the dangers of magic and heretics. The Inquisition later allied and helped form the Chantry with Kordilius Drakon I.

History

In the years before the founding of the Chantry but after the First Exalted March, Thedas was plunged into chaos. Andraste's violent movement against the Imperium was quite successful, but ultimately she was betrayed by her husband and when she died the movement withered without a real leader. Indeed, she was the chosen of the Maker and with her death the world was to be punished.   Despite the spread of the Maker's teachings due to the march, blood magic and Old God cults were widespread. The Imperium had controlled the majority of the world prior to the march and its poisonous tendrils still polluted every inch of the land they once covered, especially in Thedas' darker corners. Some aggressive Tevinters took it upon themselves to show the rest of Thedas fear, and began summoning powerful demons unto those who could in no way oppose such powerful beings. The Inquisition formed with the goal of protecting the people from the "tyranny of magic" in whatever form it might've taken: blood mages, abominations, cultists, or heretics. A loose association of hard-liners, the group combed the land in search of these threats.   It is unclear whether they were adored or feared. Some tales seem to suggest that the years of their existence were much like a reign of terror. Other tales say the Inquisition was cast in a negative light by history because their investigations and applications of justice, protecting both mages and common people impartially, crossed too many powerful groups.

Disbandment

After many decades of the Inquisition's existence, the newly founded Chantry found common cause with the Inquisition and was able to convince the group to sign the Andrastian Accord. As part of the agreement, the Inquisition became the new martial arm of the Chantry, the Templar Order, and its senior members became known as the Seekers of Truth. Another result was the creation of the Circle of Magi, with the Templars serving as overseers for the Circle.   The last leader of the Inquisition, Ameridan, went missing after the organisation's dissolution. It is said he left to hunt a powerful dragon or to not overshadow the newly created Templar Order.   When the Inquisition was no more, a mysterious cult rose up for the first time, claiming to be the real Inquisition and Seekers of Truth. They were quickly dispersed by the might of the newly established Chantry. Tall tales say that this organization still lingers under the identity of the Rangers of the South.
