Arzier
Arzier: the city of industry. Nowhere pushes out more technological inventions than this settlement on the southern tail of the Crescent Mountains. Positioned at the artificial split of a river just before its twin waterfalls, Arzier is a marvel of dwarven innovation. Steel embankments keep the river from returning to its natural course.
As you approach Arzier, you will first see the farm fields stretching for miles around. Some dozen houses dot the lake and surrounding land - far fewer than you might expect to feed a city of this size, but they get the job done. Next, the mighty twin waterfalls become visible, tumbling violently down the cliffside. You might catch a glimpse of the edge of the city above - but how to get up?
You first choice is a wooden walkway that crosses the lake and then zigzags its way up the cliff, between the waterfalls. However, this path is steep and always wet. For those who are not sure-footed, it can be a dangerous trek. Nonetheless you will see many walking this path, like ants crawling up a hill.
Your second option is to take the falls-powered elevator. This metal contraption is foreign to most visitors (unless they have worked in certain mines), but its mechanics are actually quite simple: a pulley and water wheel form the basis of this device. Both waterfalls feature an elevator that transports citizens and visitors up and down, to and from the city.
Now you are in Arizer proper. You will notice the glass ducts and tubes that lace across the city - a series of clever messaging and delivery systems. When a scroll or parcel passes overhead, you can thank Tenzost Iblewoble. If you have the coin to spare, a visit to The Twin Falls Inn will do you well - it has spectacular views of the two waterfalls. For those with tighter purse strings, The Clockwork Owl also faces the falls, and boasts an unparalleled selection of ales and lagers. It is home to Clack-Tok, the famous mechanical spirit, though you are just as likely to find him wandering the streets during the day.
Nobles' manors line the city's front, all facing the waterfalls. Head to the city center for the market square, where you will find food and general wares alongside mechanical components, or wander the perimeter to tour the industrial warehouses. Most are powered by water wheel. Towards the back of the city, more houses abound.
Beyond the city, up past the river's split, lies the mining operation that is the beating heart of Arzier. Raw materials are shipped downriver, either floating directly to their respective warehouses or utilizing the mail delivery system to get where they are going.
