The Scarlet Curtains Theatre
The Scarlet Curtains open-air theatre was once a resplendent hotspot for entertainment, but has since fallen into near-ruin. Featuring spots for the poor and wealthy alike, it now struggles to fill a quarter of its cheapest seats on opening night, and its relatively new owner is desperate for solutions. Unfortunately, her current strategy of "quantity over quality" is failing miserably.
The theatre's troubles can largely be traced to the death of its founder, previous owner, and lead actress, the half-elf Esumera Fabulosa (at least, that was her stage name). While her name might bring to mind the image of a diva, she was in fact known for her warm and kind personality, and regularly stepped down to give others the spotlight when a play called for it. She was also famously discerning, turning down the works of even famous playwrights that went on to flop at other theatres.
Shortly before her unexpected death, Esumera passed on the mantle to her much younger sister, Munoda. With the older sister's guidance, the theatre continued to flourish. But after Esumera's murder at the hands of a scorned playwright, the theatre's decline was swift and damning. As Munoda proved to be a much less capable actress and producer, many of the most talented actors and crew left to find work elsewhere - most congregated around the Half-Moon Playhouse, a much smaller theatre that caters to the wealthy. Those that stayed where driven away by Munoda's temper, and any new hires who showed a shred of talent were subject to her jealous rages.
Over the past thirty years, Munoda has learned to tame her temper, and treats her few remaining employees well. But it seems too late to save the failing playhouse. The Scarlet Curtains Theatre teeters on the brink of self-destruction, and Munoda has no one to blame but herself.
