Briar
Briar is a unique rank and title in the society of the High Kingdom of Imesse. It is a position of authority and rule defined by a (typically) small geographic area roughly equivalent to a county or shire. Most Briars rule over a few towns and villages, and the average population governed is between 5,000 and 20,000 people. It is the equivalent of a traditional count, a Sherriff of Cobal or a Ryuri in Colo.
Briars are appointed by Dukes, Barons and Kings and serve for life. The title is not usually hereditary, but many sons have followed their father's into the title with the appointing lord's approval.
