Lance Fourney

The Lance Fourney of the Kingdom of Aria are the oldest military formation still utilized by the Kingdom.  Consisting of an armored knight, an armored sergeant-at-arms, squires for each and several archers, these mounted units pose a legitimate threat to anyone they encounter, as they are trained and equipped to face a variety of hazzards and dangers.  Fully capable of fighting as a cohesive unit either mounted or on foot and able to strike at range with long or horn bows that can pierce plate armor, they are also able to travel fast to get word of an attack to commanders further in the rear.

Composition

Manpower

Three to seven man unit consisting of an armored knight, a sergeant-at-arms, two squires, and (at least) one archer.  All are mounted but only the knight, sergeant and squires are mounted during battle.

Equipment

Knight is armored in plate with shield and lance, sword, axe and dagger.  Sergeant and squires are lightly armored, sword, axe, dagger and short bow. Archers have leather cuirass, iron helm, pike/pole axe, short sword, long bow/horn bow.  All carry 5 days rations and fodder.

Structure

Knight commands unit, assisted by sergeant.  Multiple lance units can be formed into companies of 40 to 50 men, all mounted and all capable of multi-unit maneuvers.

Tactics

Lance Fourney units operate singly or in pairs (typically) as patrol and security elements on frontier dispatch.  Also frequently employed to maintain peace and security on roads or paths at risk of attack or brigandry.
