Emelia is, like Fenler Karalius, an investigator of the supernatural. She's usually the more assertive and daring of the pair as they travel the world solving unnatural mysteries.

Development

When Emelia and Fenler Karalius arrived in Barovia, Ezmeralda D'Avenir's soul moved in with Emelia's body.

Soul fusion

Upon entering Barovia, Ezmeralda D'Avenir's soul had just been returned to the world by Strahd von Zarovich. However, there was a curse connected to the return of her soul, it needed a body, Emelia's body. From that moment on, Ezmeralda D'Avenir and Emilia became one as they now share the same body. 
In order to fix this problem Rudolph van Richten took Emilia to Alanik Ray and Arthur Sedgwick at the end of The Old Svalich Road.
It was there where Arthur managed to separate Ezmeralda D'Avenir's soul from Emelia's body, but just like everything else in Barovia, everything comes at a cost. To remove Ezmeralda D'Avenir's soul, he needed to remove both souls first and then put Emilia's back in. However, a soul that has touched the mists of Barovia, must remain in Barovia. No resurrected can ever leave this place. Emelia knew the terms and agreed to them.
