The Orethea
Purpose / Function
The Orethea's original building shell was initially constructed for use as a Private Clinic for Dr. Henry Charles Jacca. However after his execution, several projects were attempted to repurpose it into something new. None succeeded until a young wrethian by the name Hrossir came to purchase the land from the Consulate so that she could open the new location as a brothel.
History
The history of the building that would come to be known as The Orethea starts with Dr. Henry Charles Jacca. Dr. Jacca was both a general practitioner and surgeon born in the Silos District of Invitus Rán. He was educated at a university on Earth, and came back to the Citadel after finishing his education and attaining his license to practice. He set his clinic up in the Rak District, as that district was often visited by outsiders, being close to the docks. Many people in the district who couldn't afford to pay the medical fees were also accepted as patients. However, in the year 2184 CE, an economic crash back on Earth deeply effected the trade route to the Invitus Rán, and money and resources became scarce. Dr. Jacca had to turn to other means to keep his private practice afloat. He began charging exorbitant prices for his care, and local malcontents began disappearing quietly in the area. At first, no one noticed that the people would vanish after seeking treatment, and Dr. Jacca had no written records of them ever visiting. But, one night, someone staggered into one of the local bar with their guts hanging out. The individual in question was a local drunk by the name of Oswald "Ozzy" Derst. He claimed he went to Dr. Jacca's to get tested for a disease he thought he had caught from a hooker 3 districts out. He said that Jacca seemed sympathetic and took some of his blood, but came back a few minutes later claiming that Derst needed to come in for immediate surgery. Derst was understandably confused and was reluctant to cooperate, but the Jacca cornered him and stuck something in him and Derst claimed to have passed out. He woke up, groggy and delirious, tied to an operating table, with Jacca removing one of his kidney's. Derst panicked and with a sudden surge of adrenaline, broke the bonds and knocked Jacca unconscious. He then said he staggered towards the bar to get help. Derst died within an hour after telling his story and while Jacca was the one who usually did autopsies in the district, the other district residents grew a bit mistrustful. They took Derst's body to a hospital in the Frann District, and they were told that Derst had died of blood poisoning, as both of his kidneys had been removed. Now more willing to believe Derst's stories, and presented with the evidence of his story; the district overseer gave permission to raid Jacca's clinic. Jacca had cleaned up the place since he had lost Derst, but they managed to find Derst's kidneys. Jacca was brought before the district court. He was tried and found guilty of murder, illegal organ harvesting, smuggling, and tax evasion. Jacca was sentenced to death by ejection (forcibly ejected from an airlock to freeze and suffocate in the vacuum of space).
The District looked into repurposing the building, but lacked the funds to do so, even after liquidating Jacca's assets and selling his tools and supplies. So the building naturally reverted to the ownership of the Consulate. They repurposed the old clinic into a tract house, a way stop for astronauts and space farers who couldn't afford a hotel to rest their heads for a night. Of course, tract houses have always attracted a certain type of individual, those who could be described as "morally bankrupt." The place became a meeting house for smugglers for several years, until one night their was a bad shoot out that left eight smugglers and one passerby dead. After that, the place was closed as a tract house indefinitely.
For a decade the building remained abandoned and unvisited save by the occasional urban explorer drawn to the sordid history of the place, or drug addicts looking for a place to get their fix where no one would bother them. In the year 2199, an ambitious young Wrethian woman by the name of Hrossir saw flaws in the current prostitution system that the city used, and seeing the Rak District had no brothels and an abandoned building practically begging to be used, she bought the place and cleaned it up. It was named the Orethea and it opened to clients in the year 2201 CE. Over the last 57 years, it has grown into quite the popular establishment for staitioners and outsiders alike.
