Noble Guard Capitan

Similarly to a regular Capitan, Noble Guard Capitans serve as officers and commanders of Noble Guards. Unlike their regular counterparts however, a Noble Guard Capitan's primary focus isn't logistics and strategy. They are the last line of defense and the most powerful warrior of a noble's bodyguard.   They wield polehammers and swords to be able to handle any attacker. They also wear heavier armor and carry a shield to be able to withstand more serious attacks, that would eliminate all Noble Guards.

Equipment

Armor

Every Noble Guard Capitan is outfitted with standardized armor that is produced throughout the realm at various locations. Just like regular Capitans have better gear than a Patron, a Noble Guard Capitan's armor is leagues ahead of a standard Noble Guard's.
  • The first layer of protection remains a set of padded armor, which is relatively thin, mostly serving as padding. While this layer is made from high quality materials, it is much less useful against blunt force than those of Patrons.
  • On top of their padded armor, a Noble Guard Capitan wears a set of steel plate armor, which is a bit more extensive than those of regular Noble Guards. This plate armor is heavily inspired by Westatoran armor. It covers their vitals, hands, lower leg and feet and their shoulders.
  • As they rely on their comrades to spot incoming threats, a Noble Guard Capitan is wearing a half-enclosed helmet, paired with a mail coif that offers excellent protection, leaving only their mouths exposed, which allows them to communicate orders and doesn't limit their ability to eat or drink while they are on duty.
  • Between their padded armor and plate armor, Noble Guard Capitans wear an ornamented tunic that usually bears their own family crest.
  • Over their attire, they wear a cloak, which is there to provide additional protection from the weather, as a Noble Guard Capitan is expected to be awake and ready at all times. That being said, they usually forego the cloak as they rarely need it.
  • Whilst the vast majority of the Blakfort Royal Army does not use a shield for protection, a Noble Guard Capitan does. They use this shield to protect themselves, but more importantly, the noble under their protection from missiles.

Weapons

A Noble Guard Capitan is the last line of defense when their protected noble comes under attack, so they are required to carry two weapons.
  • As their sidearm, they carry a longsword, similarly to a regular Noble Guard, which they use against lightly armored opponents.
  • When a Noble Guard Capitan needs to get their hands dirty, it usually means that the assailant is heavily armored, so they carry a polehammer. A fearsome weapon, a polehammer can be devastating to even against knights.

Miscellaneous

Whilst they are more important than regular Noble Guards, Noble Guard Capitans carry the same auxiliary equipment.

Duties

In addition to the duties of a regular Noble Guard, Noble Guard Capitans have a few other duties while protecting a noble.
  • Advising the noble in security questions
  • Entering rooms before the noble
  • Checking the noble's quarters for traps or assassins

Qualifications

After serving as a Noble Guard for at least 10 years, a would be Capitan can write a letter of candidacy to the Marshall. The Marshall then either accepts it or denies it based on the candidate's track record and commendations. Usually, a number of sponsors are necessary to obtain such a promotion, who'll sway the Marshall.   Once a new Noble Guard Capitan is appointed, they immediately get 20 Noble Guards under their command, as there are more Noble Guards than the required amount.

Skirmish Tactics

Noble Guard Capitans live and die for the noble under their protection. When attacked, Noble Guard Capitans will stay within arm's reach of the noble, guarding them with their lives. They usually have two fighting styles.
  • If they are with a noble under their protection, they will be extremely defensive, often completely focusing on protecting the target rather than attacking the assailants.
  • If for some reason a noble is not around to be protected, e.g. he died, a Noble Guard Capitan will fight much more aggressively, charging into the fray with their polehammer.
