Capitan

High ranking members of the Blakfort Royal Army are outfitted with better equipment than their common counterparts. These Capitans wear plate armour and fully enclosed helmets. They are tasked with leading battalions of Patrons and manage their supplies. Every Capitan is subservient to the Marshall, but he can designate Generals during times of war who would command several Capitans to coordinate war efforts.   Capitans get promoted based on their aptitude for strategy and tactics, rather than their martial prowess, so in a one-on-one fight they aren’t much better than the average Patron. The main difference comes from their equipment, which is far more protective than those of Patrons or Stovigins.

Equipment

Armor

A Capitan is outfitted with standardized armor that is produced throughout the realm at various locations. Capitans receive some of the best armor that the armorsmiths of Cirflucas can produce.
  • Similarly to a Patron, a Capitan's first layer of armor is a set of padded armor that covers most of their body. Their legs retain the overlapping armor, but a Capitan's armor is more concentrated in the center of the body as they are more likely to be attacked at range from the front. A Capitan's padded armor is also made from better materials and thus can be much thinner than a Patron's.
  • On top of their padded armor, Capitans wear chainmail armor which also covers their entire body.
  • At the uppermost layer, Capitans are outfitted with a set of full steel plate armor which covers the majority of their body. Their legs are not as well armored though, to allow them to ride a horse or sit in a chair while wearing their armor.
  • Capitans wear fully enclosed steel helmets with extensive aventails that cover their entire head. While it could seem unwise to hinder the Capitan's ability to communicate, the helmet's look is deceiving as the aventail that covers their mouths offers excellent airflow into and out of the helmet.
  • Because their outfit is much more distinct and they are less likely to be exposed to the elements, most Capitans ditch their cloaks in exchange for a minimalistic surcoat or tabard that displays their family crest or Battalion crest.

Weapons

As Capitans rarely fight, they can often be found without a weapon, but during battles they generally wield longswords or greatswords, often bought from their pay.

Miscellaneous

Usually a Capitan is preforming similar duties to a Stovigin, but the neccessary equipment is carried by others and not the Capitans themselves. There are some pieces of equipment that are small enough or important enough for a Capitan to carry with him at all times.
  • To ensure quick communication with their fellow Capitans, each carries a Sending Stone with them, which allows for instantaneous communication between them and the Marshall. These only work once a day and can only convey a short message, so their use is limited to emergencies only.
  • Whilst their maps are often carried by Suppliers or other Patrons, the compass of a Battalion is always with its Capitan.

Duties

A Capitan's daily duties are basically the same a those of a Stovigin, albeit on a Battalion level.

Qualifications

Capitans serve for life, so a new Capitan is appointed only when a previous one perishes or a new Battalion is created. When a new Capitan is needed, the Marshall personally appoints a new Capitan from the Stovigins of the Battalion in question. If a new Battalion is created from scratch for some reason, one of the Capitans are appointed as the leader of the newly created Battalion and a new Capitan is chosen for the now leaderless Battalion.

Skirmish Tactics

When a Capitan finds themselves under attack personally, they know that they have fucked something up and most of them are willing to face the consequences. Generally, Capitans are surrounded by Patrons and Couselns, so they rely on others heavily, shouting orders at them. In personal combat, Capitans fall into two main categories.
  • Those that wield longswords for self-defense often fight similarly to a Stovigin, defending against attacks and striking only when an opportunity presents itself.
  • Some Capitans like to use swords and train with them regularly. They often wield greatswords and prefer to attack their enemies aggressively in skirmishes, while they are distracted by his allies.
