Orilum

Introduction

Orilum is a trading center between Austium and Kirkwall and beyond that, the Great Plains.   The city is one of the most prominent cities of the Kingdom and is famous for the rich people that live here. Almost everyone in the city wears fancy outfits that amaze the merchants travelling through.
Additionally, the city is protected by the Blakfort Royal Army, with several hundred patrons patrolling the city every day.

Districts

Beerside - The Northern part of city and on the left bank of the river Vigili is where most common folk live in the city. Many of them are artisans and merchants, but a lot of farmers also live in this part of the city.
The Bowls - Still in the North, but on the right bank of the river, this district is the newest in the city. It is mostly home to the woodcutters and farmers who pave the way for further expansion of the city.
The Garden - Within the Orilum castle, the Garden is the Northern part of the city within the walls and serve as the entrance to the castle. It is home to many merchants and rich citizens.
The Castle - The majority of the city within the walls are simply referred to as the Castle. It is home to the richest people within the city, which is clearly shown by the amount of paintings on each building. The Castle is also filled with many mercenaries who seek to make a fortune by serving as guards for these people.
Blackhill - The Southeastern part of the city and home to mostly farmers. Its name comes from the fertile, black soil that covers the small hills and the fact that charcoal is being burned on the shore of the lake.
Silver Bank - The Southern part of the city, on the shore of the lake. The Silver Bank serves as the harbour of the city. Most payments are made in silver, hence the name.
Gloomspring - Most of the right bank of the river is part of this district. It is where the majority of the 'common' artisans, such as smiths and cobblers are.
West District - Similarly to the Bowls, the West District is the edge of the city and mostly home to peasants and workers.

History

The city's name first appeared in 731, when the Lacager Lordship was created. It was regarded as one of the most defensible cities within the realm and it has the same reputation ever since. Throughout its existence, the city was a prominent fortification, a religious stronghold and a trading center. Its first mention wasn't at the time of its settlement, as the impressive fortifications of the city are mentioned in that very document, so the construction of the first castle or fort can be dated before the 8th century.   After its inclusion in the Lordship of Lacager, the city grew steadily on top of the the hill. While the city was involved in the many wars of the growing Lordship, it was only besieged for a short period of time before the first important event in the city's history.   In 878, after the conversion of Kirk I, the Kaolite population took up arms to restore their faith in the realm in one of the most potent rebellions in the Kingdom's history. The city proved to be a hard nut to crack for the forces of Kirk, when he besieged the city with the help of the Atacodians. After the rebellion, serious measures were taken to disarm the Kaolite population and many temples were built throughout the city.   In the following decades, the city grew more and more, slowly becoming a sprawling trading hub. By the 10th century, the majority of the city was outside of the walls. Another, important event in the city's history mirrored the previous one.   In 987, the Orilum rebellion took place, which was also one of the more dangerous rebellions. This time, the uprising wasn't about religion, but taxes. Under the rule of Dorota Blakfort, the kingdom and thus the population of Orilum was taxed heavily to supply the army. Peasants, burghers and even some nobles took up arms in Orilum, Magnulacus and many other villages within Lacager. The assembled army outnumbered the Royal Army 3 to 1 and managed to besiege Austium. The rebellion was crushed, but the city didn't suffer any consequences.   In 1099, Kojata the Blessed established the Pilgrimite Legion in Orilum where they stayed until the Pilgrim Fortress was constructed in 1158.   In the following centuries, the city became larger and larger and eventually gained its current status as the city of the rich, but thanks to its highly defensible position and its geographical location, it wasn't attacked.
