Andahad

Beheld by Ngranek

A ruined city set on the southern coast of the Isle of Oriab. Although otherwise unhidden, the view of Andahad is often blocked by Mount Ngranek, so a traveler must journey to the unpopulated half of the island to see these ruins. Indeed, the stony, inhuman face carved into Ngranek's southern face seems to look almost directly at the former city, as if in judgment.   Judging by its architecture, Andahad must have been a well-developed city in its time. That was long ago enough that the Baharnans, current natives of Oriab, have not even legends of the ruin's inhabitants. Now, most of the city is salt-encrusted and collapsing. The interiors of buildings, visible through holes in their clay-hewn walls, seem oddly devoid of furniture or other signs that anyone once lived there.   The place is not, however, completely unknown. Some worshipers of Omoikane might recognize its name from writings on their goddess. The people of Andahad once paid tribute to the Goddess of Nightmare and were entrusted with the keeping of her most valued secrets. Doom befell them, as so many other cities of the Dreamlands, but its cause remains unknown. Perhaps the jealous Great Ones of Kadath struck it down with a plague, or perhaps Nodens in his Abyss beneath Oriab deemed Omoikane's collection of dark knowledge too dangerous to survive.   Whatever fate led to its ruin, Andahad now only serves as a passage to the Caves of Life. Pilgrims with the blessing of Omoikane can journey to the great, half-collapsed dome at the city's center with a token of their goddess' favor. There, in what must once have been a grand amphitheater, a stone monolith allows transport to the Caves of Life, where many of Omoikane's most powerful secrets are sealed away.
