Baharna

Great Port on Oriab

Summary

A great port of the Dreamlands nestled in the northern shore of the Isle of Oriab. Baharna is home to the Baharnans, who take their namesake from the settlement, and the only remaining major point of civilization on Oriab. As a midway point in the vast Dreamsea, Baharna sees a lot of traffic from vessels of other major ports such as Celephaïs and Dylath-Leen. The latter tend to be less welcome, due to their tendency to associate with the Black Galleon Slavers who so often prey upon Baharnans, but the city-state is not one to turn away trade regardless of its source.   The myriad wonders of Oriab provide an array of unique goods which can only be found or crafted in Baharna. These include the sweet resin that is harvested from the island's trees, exotic pottery molded from the clay and magma of Ngranek, and, most notoriously, Ghost Leather tanned from the hides of dangerous Wamps which dwell in the ruins across the city's southeast lake. As they trade for most of their necessities, Baharnans do not engage in much agriculture themselves. It is most common for residents of the city to take up the mantle of craftsman or merchant. As a result, the city's military force is sparse, making them a prime target for Slavers from the Cities of the Dreaming Moon and the Plateau of Leng.   As a city, Baharna is quite beautiful in its own way, although not as brilliant as Celephaïs, opulent as Oonai, or labyrinthine as Dylath-Leen. Centered mostly around its main port, the rest of Baharna is treated more as an afterthought, a place for people to live and rest while the real work happens at the ocean's edge. Its buildings are formed of clay and stone, displaying a unique style of architecture which nevertheless shows influence from the Dreamers of Earth, and the tropical climate allows for growth of heavy vegetation among the city's streets.   Notable landmarks of Baharna include the Great Port, the Library of Baharna, the Steps of Ngranek, and the Ruins of Tyrhhia across Lake Yath to the southeast.

Alliance

Baharna and Celephaïs have a history of friendliness and trade that has survived many generations. This bond is only strengthened by their common enemy in the Black Galleon Slavers.

Alliance

Already on friendly terms since their mutual discovery, the actions of Hashinara Clan Daimyō Hashinara Yoshitakatomo and Maverick General Matsumoto Ooawagaeri in fighting the Black Galleon Slavers and returning captured Baharnans home have earned the respect and gratitude of Veasna the Elder.

Uneasy Trade Agreement

The relationship between Baharna and the Caelestis Collegium is marked by hesitant agreement to trade on one side and almost total indifference on the other. It is unlikely the Baharnans will ever come to fully accept the residents of Dylath-Leen due to their willingness to associate with Black Galleon Slavers.
