Scene: A Damselfly Delivery

"I'm getting out of this," Iolani says. "This ...ordinary job for ordinary people - I'm suffocating!"

I'm not surprised. She has often aired her disdain for work like this. It's not her work etiquette. Many changelings have challenges enough just in living that they can't work consistently, but Iolani is more ...driven. She could work her ass off in any line of work at any workplace willing to take in a fae. When she's not delivery driving with me, she spends quite some time in the gym, and putting quite some energy in her social presence. Her problem is authorities.

"Driving around all day, in quaint little blue uniforms - clashing with my blue skin - knocking and nodding. "Yes, hello, I hope my presence isn't scaring you - here's your package, sir!" Off to the next. On and on and on!"
She wouldn't be caught dead making silly voices anywhere else than when she's driving with me.

"It's to ease us into society" I say drily.

"By becoming just like them," she states dismissively. "How can you do it - Just conform like that?"

"It allows me to afford an actual appartment... eventually."

"Said like a good, ordinary immagical humie."

"Like your online yoga stuff isn't 'ordinary'," I say back teasingly.

"At least doing that I'm my own boss," she snaps back proudly. "And I'm preparing to go full time with it. Soon. I've got the viewers. Gonna be a personal trainer too. Folks are willing to pay for my expertise and guidance."

"Folks are willing to pay to see some sweaty blue skin in skin tight shorts." I correct her. "You're their fetish."

"They do it because I know my shit. And if some come for the blue, so what - rather fetishized than feared, I say."

"Huh!" I respond. "Zeldine used that saying too earlier."

"That girl is a slut" Iolani retorts. "Only motivated by dope and dick"

"She's just ...having a hard time adjusting to life"

"A hard time adjusting on all those humie dicks, more like," she laughs. "Last stop." She abrubtly say, pointing a finger, keeping her hands on the wheel.

Iolani stops the van in front of an appartment block, and I step out, happy to breathe som fresh air. I check the list while opening the backdoor, grabbing a large, heavy package. As I turn towards the building, I notice a young child clinging to a 2nd floor window, yelling something as he sees me and quickly disappearing. Before moving, I rustle my hair a bit, hoping it will fluff out enough under the cap to cover the tip of my ears.
"Damselfly delivery!" I call into the door phone, and I hear the door buzz, I glance back at the van for a sec before entering the stairway, headed for the appartment with the child in the window. I don't have to knock as I hit the floor and a short woman opens the door with a cautious smile, trying to act natural, no doubt.
"Uh, hi!" I try to mimick her smile, as I approach her. Trying not to feel awkward, but I always do. "A packet for a, uhh, Beatrice Neumann?"
"Yes, that is me," she states, still smiling, maintaining eye contact. Probably to convince me - and herself - that she isn't scared or put off by me. Some people do that.

While she signs the order, I notice two kids in the hallway behind her. One was the boy from the window the other must be his older sister, but wait. I zone out for a second, when I notice the wispy young girl's pointy ears. She is maybe six. A little younger than I was, when my family-
"Sorry about Lily - she's a bit shy". The mother's words yank me out of my thoughts, and I realize she caught me staring. I force a polite smile, to not die of embarrasment.
"Oh, no worry, madam," I say as professionally as I can muster the words.
"It's not often she meets other ...you know." The woman - or Beatrice I guess - turns her head to the girl and beckons her. "It's okay Lily. Come and say hello to the nice woman."
The girl runs to her mother, hiding partially behind her, while staring me down. Accepting the invitation from her mother, I squat down to Lily and take off my cap, and I see her eyes jump to my ears. I send her a warm smile, "Hi, Lily. My name is Alea."

"Took your time" Iolani states as I return to the van.

"They had a changeling," I answer pensively. "Little pale girl... Nixie or something probably."

"Should deliver her to the Glade then," Iolani answers matter-of-factly, as she starts up the van. "So she can grow up with her kin."

"She is with her kin," I retort. "It's a good thing that some are actually trying.. That not all changelings have to be orphaned ...like we were."

"She'd be happier with other fae - I know I was"

I stare out at the white cloudy sky, happy that the shift is over. My mind drifting to melancholy - I need to lie down. The trip home to the depot we're quiet.
