History of Vald

The First Age

... 10001

For an eternity before the beginning of time, the The Primordial Twins coexisted in a state of limbo. J'numbra the Replete represented the world's will to exist, opposed by Ma'ool the Empty, the representation of the void fighting back. The universe roiled in uncertain superposition for aeons before The Great Dragon forced an end to the eternal struggle. The Twins were torn asunder, and Dielynor rose to divine power, ending the First Age.

  • The Beginning
    The Dance of Creation

For an eternity before the birth of The Great Dragon, J'numbra the Replete and Ma'ool the Empty struggled in perfect opposition to one another, giving birth to the cosmos. Many philosophers suggest that the existence of a universe at all is evidence of J'numbra's ultimate victory. Astronomers claim that the universe consists predominantly of empty space between the stars and realms, hinting at a victorious Ma'ool. Others, especially in clandestine circles, celebrate Dielynor's triumph over the Twins as testament that the rightful master of the cosmos will yet return...

The Second Age

10000 1

At the onset of the Second Age, the The Primordial Twins were destroyed in the Sundering. Empowered by the Dielynor, now supreme, dragons ravaged the world unopposed, commanding powerful magic. Over the coming millenia, the mortal races of the world would develop in subjugation to their draconic overlords. Superstitious and fearful, they would be silently guided in their development for thousands of years by The Broken Pantheon, fresh born from the ashes of the Twins.   This is the age of divine intervention and heroes. Monarchs would rise and fall on the whims of newborn gods, dipping their toes in the celestial waters. At first, The Broken Pantheon acted independantly from one another, empowering their own champions and squabbling over followers not unlike toddlers with their toys. Their avatars built mighty empires and slayed ancient dragons before inevitably overreaching and falling from favor to experience a grizzly demise. It would take a full 10,000 years before realizing they would need to work together to overcome the threat of The Great Dragon.

    The Sundering
    Celestial / Cosmic

As J'numbra the Replete and Ma'ool the Empty struggled against one another for dominion over the multiverse, a terrifying power gestated in the roiling tides of The Aether. For an eternity, The Great Dragon fed on the chaos and turbulence of The Primordial Twins' battle. By the time they learned of their inadvertent creation, it was too late. Without warning, Dielynor emerged from the void and tore the Twins asunder, consuming their essence and ascending to supremacy. It was this cataclysm that created The Broken Pantheon, and secured the dragons' unchallenged dominion for the next 10,000 years.

The Third Age

0 and beyond

The Third Age began over a thousand years ago, on the day Dielynor was defeated by the Heroes of Old. This marked the beginning of the end of the dragons' dominion over Vald-- cut off from the source of their power, they were challenged by the myriad races of the world for supremacy for the first time in ages.   As the power of dragons waned, the kingdoms of mortals grew exponentially, expanding in all directions until the beasts of legend were all but driven to extinction and forgotten. With the enemy vanquished, their union born of necessity would weaken and dissolve. As years passed, and witnesses to the myths grew old and died, the uneasy peace collapsed into a struggle for dominance between the mortal kingdoms. For decades, the world was aflame with great wars of conquest and reprisal.   It wasn't until the Covenant of Seers, witnesses of the past and future, rose to prominence that peace would be restored to Vald. Guided by the great Phoenixes, agents of Fate, the Covenant consolidated power, establishing a line of kings traced back to the great wizard Glynd. The Commonwealth of Dielynor was born, and it would be the solemn duty of the High King, advised by the Covenant of Seers, to maintain the uneasy peace for generations to come.

    The Dragon Gambit
    Celestial / Cosmic

Long ago, at the turn of the 3rd Age, the fabled Heroes of Old united against The Great Dragon wielding the full might of The Broken Pantheon in the form of mighty artifacts created by the gods themselves.   It was this gambit that afforded the Covenant of Seers the opportunity to trap the Dragon in The Aether using the Stone Circles as anchor points. Over a thousand years later, under the vigilant eye of the Covenant, the nations of Vald coexist in a state of tenuous peace, united under the power of the Dragon Crown.   The world has mostly forgotten about the Heroes of Old, allowing history to fade into myth as the world developed its own problems. Some scholars remain watchful, ever fearful of the return of the Dragon.

    The Garden of Stones Defiled
    Metaphysical / Paranormal event

Shortly after sunset on the 4th of Summerset, mystical scholars of the Arcane Academy of Briarwood reported a wavering of the magic field emanating from Commonwealth's Stone Circle, The Garden Of Stones. The college dispatched a team of researchers almost immediately to document the phenomena, collecting data so it can be brought back to the Academy for study.
