Personal history

Eldest son of a long established family with holdings in the west of the Island of Bute, Lincoln Swinford took control of the Swinford Estate and Castle Swinford upon his father's death in 792. Both for his own ambition and because he was displeased with the administration of the Duchy of Bute and the punitive taxation being levied, he decided to found a port town to grow and supplant the duchy seat of Wrathsea so that he and his family could better control the management of the duchy for the Duke of Bute.   While successful in founding the modest port village of Ilragorn, as much due to his politically driven marriage and his father-in-law's early support as his own efforts, he never saw his vision realized and his descendants had no such ambitions. Lincoln was beloved by his vassals on the Swinford Estate and Ilragorn.   The most notable event of his tenure as Lord Swinford was defending the small temple of Mottuna in Ilragorn from repeat attacks by pirates who were intent on stealing the temple's relic, which they believed had arcane powers that would net them their biggest score. Lincoln's plans to defend the temple were almost universally flawed, however his advisor (and long term partner) Deorsa Tàillear was a decent tactician who filled the holes in Lincoln's plans and allowed them to succesfully defend the temple until the pirates were driven off.   The experience with the pirates led to a deep paranoia in Lincoln who remained suspicious of sailors for the rest of his life. It was an unfortunate trait for the leader of a port village, but in the end Lincoln was murdered by a sailor - a rival for the affections of a handsome singer performing at the local tavern with whom Lincoln had become enamored. The sailor, a first mate on a ship docked in the village, dragged Lincoln into an alley as he left the tavern, unaccompanied and unguarded after a tryst with the singer, and drowned the Lord in a rainbarrel.

Accomplishments & Achievements

Intellectual Characteristics

Lincoln believed that everyday was an opportunity to learn and better himself, and he expected as much from the others around him.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

With a touch of an inferiority complex and ambition driving him, Lincoln wanted to found a town to rival Wrathsea and supplant the duchy seat. Those plans never came close to fruition, but they were the driving force of his life until his untimely death.

Virtues & Personality perks

Lincoln cared deeply about his vassals and the residents of Port Swinford, seeing the people, rather than the buildings, as the real "village" he was founding. He had a tremendous sense of community and, as much as he wanted Ilragorn to supplant Wrathsea, he wanted to build a community loyal to the Swinford Estate.

Vices & Personality flaws

Lincoln was known to be a lover of the arts and a bit of a dilettante. Tolerated by both his wife and his long term partner was a string of lovers, mostly songwriters or storytellers. Some bards were regulars in the taverns of Ilragorn for a very good reason, but rarely did that last longer than a season.

Personality Quirks

After the defense of Ilragorn's small temple to Mottuna from pirates, Lincoln became rather paranoid about sailors - rather an unfortunate quirk for the lord of a small port village. However, his fears turned out to be justified when he was drowned in a rain barrel by a jealous first mate who was a rival for the affections of a handsome half-elf singer.

Hygiene

Lord Swinford was very hands on in the development of Ilragorn and this showed in his often dirty fingernails.

Social

Family Ties

Marriage to Orlagh Swinford nee McLean was a smart political union as the McLean merchant family had a decent sized merchant fleet which utilized Port Swinford's harbor. However, though his wife tolerated his ongoing romantic entanglements with both his long term lover and his series of short-term paramours, his father-in-law was less forgiving and took much of his business elsewhere.   His eldest son, Nico Swinford, became Lord Swinford after him, and was an unremarkable leader.   Lord Swinford's long term partner Deorsa Tàillear was closer than anyone to Lincoln and saved him from calamity more than once.

Religious Views

Lincoln Swinford was never known as a particularly religious man, paying only passing respects to the gods on holy days, yet he was known to become suddenly very religious when his life was in danger, praying to any god whose name came to his lips for salvation.

Mannerisms

Lincoln had a nervous laugh and a rather scratchy voice, leading strangers to be rather untrusting of him at first, until they were able to ascertain his generally generous and good character.

Hobbies & Pets

The town of Ilragorn was named after Lord Swinford's favorite horse, a white stallion who he raised from a foal.

Speech

His scratchy voice came as the result of a childhood respiratory illness which left him with long term damage to his throat. Though well-spoken as a lord tends to be, this vocal damage was a sore point that left Lincoln loathe to speak publicly without tremendous need.

Wealth & Financial state

The main holding of the Swinford estate was Castle Swinford and the surrounding lands upon which the vilalge of Port Swinford was built. Taxes generated by the harbor of Port Swinford increased the wealth of the Swinford state somewhat, but even within the Duchy of Bute, the Swinfords never held more than a modest income with which to support their lands. Lincoln's ambitions to grow Ilragorn into a town to rival Wrathsea never came to fruition, but he was a benevolent lord to his vassals, using what fortune the estate held to develop the town he founded.
