Island of Bute
The Isle of Bute is located in the Kerrowater Estuary. Wrathsea, the island's sole town, serves as the Duchy of Bute's administrative center. Apart from Wrathsea, the island is sparsely populated with small villages and hamlets. Port Swinford, the island's northernmost settlement, is flanked by many small hamlets.
Throughout the island's interior, notably in the western half, which is hilly but not mountainous, conifer plantations and uncultivated territory can be found. Monstrous Peak, the island's highest point, is 913 feet above sea level. The majority of the island's agricultural land is concentrated in the central section, while the most rugged terrain is found in the extreme east surrounding Glen Inglis. Loch Tamrane, the island's largest body of freshwater, is located at the glen's western end.
Northern Bute beaches are well-known for their stunning views across the Neck of Bute to Erran and Bute's little satellite island, Wintergonie. Numerous little fishing villages dot the northern shore's bays.
The Narrows of Bute, located towards the island's western end, separate Bute from the mainland, with the alternative being a much longer crossing of the Kerrowater Estuary. Despite its proximity to the mainland, the western crossing from Calcherth to Silverkeep is the least common route due to the hamlet's relatively remote location and the dangers associated with the shallows that must be overcome on this short passage of less than a fifth of a mile.
