Culture
House Courage is known, unironically, for their courageous knights. A large amount of Courage House members have become Iron Knights, and it is a highly sought after position in the House itself. House Courage boast the highest percentage of knights from their noble House, while the other Houses grumble that it is simply because they have lower standards.
History
Courage used to be a small noble House that lived within the Radiant Lance until the Inferno of Souls, where they seized the opportunity and appealed to the Iron Spear, allowed to move to the Shield. They were a strange House, the first of their kind. The House was small and traced their origins back to the Triumvirate Era, or perhaps earlier, but they did not have land or lord to show for it. A man from this small family rose with ambition, and changed this early into the 3rd century. Sir Galahadrian the Courageous, or more commonly known as Sir Galahad, the Courage, was a great friend of Sir Wulfric the Dancer, and had many a great adventure with him. The two were inseparable and created stories for the children of the Radiant Lance to listen to for generations to come. Galahad made a name for himself as someone who never backed down, of unfailing courage and determination, while his counterpart Wulfric was seductive, slippery, and charismatic, working things out without blood. Together, they managed to pull off the Great Radiant Lance Heist, robbing their Principal House's capital spire. The Radiant Lance was an exorbitant show of wealth in the form of a lighthouse, gilded in gold and covered in hundreds of sparkling jewels. Because of this, it was and is highly guarded, possibly more than any other building in the Empire besides the Conqueror's Citadel in Hero's Rest.
The two managed to use their unique skills in tandem, Galahad's courage and Wulfric's charm, to steal a huge amount of gems that they then gave away to the poor of the Radiant Lance city. The two later claimed that they did it for fun, for a challenge. Such a thing was thought impossible, especially for just two men. House Carantus was so impressed that they pardoned the two men. Although an aspect of this pardon would have been how integral Sir Wulfric and his two sons the Seaspark and the Wartide (with different women of Carantus) were to the Carantus navy. After this, the Courage name became known again, and the House grew as proper suitors appeared. House Courage grew and lent into their specialty, of knights. They focused all their efforts on the training and raising of knights, largely ignoring their female descendants, and making sure that they were masters of sword, shield, lance, and horse, like all knights must be.
Over the past few generations, House Courage has become known for their knights, a feat in itself within the Empire. But they are more known for their large quantity of knights, as all the men of Courage must be knighted, and are not known for the quality of their warriors (like how House Rinsen is known for Sir Hasting, or House Othall is known for their caliber). Other House's claim that Courage have a lower quality of knight from their large quantity, but Courage uphold the same laws and requirements needed before being dubbed, and know the other House's are just jealous.
Up until the aftermath of the Inferno of Souls and the Depression of Ashfield, Courage lived within the Dukedom of the Radiant Lance, but without a direct tie to House Carantus. This was because they had planned on moving south during the South Exodus, but when the south was abandoned, were forced to retreat north, and were pushed back into the relative safety of a city by the threat of wild Lost. The House of Courage dwindled, ashamed that they were being forgotten to history, before the appearance of Sir Galahad. Many historians also believe that the original name of Courage was not Courage, and that they had an old name in Old Sacrim that has now been forgotten to history, replaced by Courage because of the fame of Sir Galahad, the Courageous. Other historians actually claim that House Courage is an offshoot of Carantus, and that Sir Galahad was of House Carantus, and that he split from the main family for independence. He started his own House while holding noble blood of a Great House, which gave him authority to create his own unique House in his own name.
So when the opportunity of ruling over Ashfield, a depressed and stricken place, appeared, Courage took it despite the risks. They moved across the Empire and settled in Ashfield and Lord Randar worked to fix the broken town. So far, he has been improving it. Bringing jobs back to the denizens and bringing trade back into the little town through Stone Labyrinth and Ember Dominance. The people of Ashfield love Randar as the conditions of Ashfield were horrendous before he arrived, and he is working to bring the town back from the brink of death to what it once was. Many call him the Savior of Ashfield.
