Broadoak-Wells Castle

Purpose / Function

The castle was originally built to house the Thane of Broadoak-Wells, and over time led to the creation of the city Arcanis. It's large walls housed the original city, and defended it from attackers many times. Nowadays, Broadoak-Wells is a very wealthy district in Arcanis, which houses many nobles and gentry. The castle's main building houses the Arthurian Royal family, as well as wards, the royal chancellor, and occasionally high-ranking diplomats. There are also quarters for guards, maids, gardeners, etc... in nearby buildings for extended stays at the castle. The building's impressive size and sturdiness have made the castle a cultural landmark, as it would be difficult to find an Arthurian who doesn't feel proud of their nation's impressive feat of architecture.

Alterations

Starting on the first month of the first year after the war (Eldath, year 0 P.C), it was revealed that the new Arthurian royal family, the Crenellfords, would live in the Broadoak-Wells Castle, and expansion and fixing began on the castle. The great walls that surround Broadoak-Wells were repaired and upgraded, whilst the main body of the castle was expanded: both upwards and outwards. The roofs and stained glass windows were painted purple to match the Arthurian flag, and purple banners were hung up all around the castle and castle walls. The oubliette was also heavily reconstructed, as it was deemed threatening for such an imposing place to be located right under the royal family's home. It was repurposed into a number of rooms for tourism, such as a library, a small museum, and even a full winery.

Architecture

The castle is made of a light grey stone adorned with plenty of ornamentation and carvings. The walls are very tall and crenellated, with long parapets running along it, and beautiful, long purple banners. The parapets are around ten feet wide and very smooth, while the shape of the merlons vary. For the outer walls they're a regular square shape, around five feet wide with a five foot long crenells. The roofs and open courtyards are covered with varied foliage, ranging from large exotic trees, to beautiful, tiny flowerbeds.   Inside the castle, the rooms and halls are beautifully decorated, with intricate carvings and lavish decorations being found all the way through the castle. While the castle's exterior and main interior is mainly composed of stone and marble, the lower floors that house the public areas tend to use more wood and brick.

History

Broadoak-Wells castle has defended against dozens of castles in it's time, particularly when Arcanis was a very small city, and mostly all fit inside the walls. As the city got bigger, had stronger infrastructure, and became more well defended, the amount of sieges against the castle stopped.

Tourism

While Broadoak-Wells Castle doesn't allow members of the public to enter due to it's importance in housing the royal family, there are a number of rooms open to the public in what used to be the castle's oubliette before the War of the Phoenix. Tourists can visit a library filled with historic books and documents relating to Arthuria and The Chivaleir Isles' history, a grand museum with a number of Arthurian artifacts, or the royal winery, where expensive wines are aged.
