Echidna

Usually preceded by the Rozsan title 'Vierix', Echidna was a Colonial God and ruling Lichlord of The New Rozsan Empire. A veteran member of the unofficial ruling council known as the Temporal Vanguard, she answered to twin God-Emperors Nir and Nef.

Echidna eventually met her end bringing war to the Goddess of Sea Monsters herself.

History

Echidna was the first of two major New Rozsan warlords, charged by her twin god-emperors to explore and secure the myriad islands Voidward of Nireau. Echidna’s writings would remain the canon of First Contact methods for centuries. Unlike her glory-driven counterpart Adepticus, the Ebon Hand was as content to use subterfuge as she was to use violence, though if a fight was necessary, she was well ready: known as the Volgirre, her elite guard were masters of survival, infiltration, psychology, swordsmanship and blood magic. At their height they were perhaps the most feared navy on Materia.

Headquarters

Though she was semi-constantly in the field and mostly left political affairs up to delegates, Echidna was the Vierix (a sort of God-Queen) of a mountainous New Rozsan fiefdom named Xois. Her personal castle survives to this day, in the centre of what is now the sprawling island-city of Caer Gormengast.

The Rozsan-Koroan Wars

While much of the exploration and colonization carried out by Echidna and the Volgirre was successful, they encountered fierce and innovative resistance from the Noa-Aina-Koroa of the Firstsong Islands. The Koroans did not fear death, even embracing it in ways that were similar to—but inversions of—the necromancy of New Rozsan imprecators. The empire had found a worthy rival. And indeed, the continued existence of the Noa-Aina-Koroa proves they won the war of attrition, though seemingly at massive cost: the Rozsan-Koroan Wars feature heavily in their chronicles and they endure frequent hauntings by the scornful Rozsan dead.
