Shaeda Kelzanna, a traveling jeweller and merchant, dreamed of settling in the great city of Kraggenhammen with a shop of her own. One day, after years of work and saving, she finally saved enough to make this dream come true. From the moment her caravan's wheels rolled through the city's Southern gates, Shaeda knew life was going to turn for the better. Indeed, she was right! For starters, without having to fear persecution and robbery from Estalia's nastier denizens, Shaeda was free to focus on her craft. Her talented artisanship soon drew countless customers, and even impressed some of Kraggenhammen's top dwarf craftsmen. One fateful day, a stout, gruff, dwarf warrior named Magran Throlmund wandered into Shaeda's store, the Little Dragon's Hoard. Originally, Magran intended to see whether its jewelry was as good as his peers claimed it to be. Yet, despite the marvellous shapes and lustre of the store's many necklaces and rings, Magran could not take his eyes off of the lady who made them, nor could she take her eyes off him. In true cliché fashion, it was love at first sight! After a few romantic years, Magran and Shaeda became husband and wife. It was not long before Shaeda was pregnant with her first child; yet, that did not slow down her enterprising work for even a second! Each and every day throughout her pregnancy, Shaeda would trek through Kraggenhammen's four pits and go out of her way to put up flyers, greet colleagues, and meet clients to promote her business. Even on the day of Linric's birth, as Shaeda went into labour at Kraggenhammen's North pit, she would not stop barking at the passerby trying to help her to first finish putting up her flyers. In similar fashion, Shaeda gave birth to Linric's younger sister, Arielle, few years later in Kraggenhammen's Southern pit. Magran is an accomplished member of The Slayers, Kraggenhammen's legendary order of monster-slayers. However, he retired to support Shaeda at her booming store and raise their two children. For, Linric and Arielle have always been a handful to take care of. Growing up, Linric and Arielle took immediate interest in their mom's work and their Dad's tales of formidable beasts and heroic exploits. Fortunately, Shaeda was as happy to train them in her craft as Magran was to boast about his adventures! Linric and Arielle have always been an energetic and inseparable pair, and they are still close to this day! However, fate would have them walk different paths. For although Arielle was free to follow her mother's jeweller footsteps, Linric was destined to become a slayer. Linric was enthusiastic to take on this role, as his father did decades ago. However, Linric soon found that training was going to be much harder for him than most inductees. For, Linric has a slender build compared to his dwarf peers and as such, he struggled with the gruelling physical training required to become a Slayer. Worse still, Linric floundered in his martial training, no matter which weapon he tried to wield. "None of these weapons feel right," he would protest. In Linric's hands, the axes, hammers, swords, and shields felt closer to a poorly-stitched shirt that just could not fit right! Instead of taking pity on Linric, his fellow trainee's took great pleasure in laughing at his blunders and beating him up during training. However, none of their torments stung Linric's core quite as bad as his growing feelings of shame. Linric felt like he was dragging his Father's name and legacy through the mud. However, Magran reassured Linric he was proud of his perseverance and pushed him to go on. And so, Linric persevered. One day, as Linric was walking home after another battering day of training, he encountered his worst bullies blocking his way, Kajalt Oreblood, Brath Frostbeard, and the Gulbrek brothers, Kiji and Pilart. Linric immediately recognized they had finally grown tired of tormenting him and now wanted to drive him out of the Slayer training program for good. Linric turned and fled into a twisting network of alleyways, but soon ran into a dead-end. Cornered, outnumbered, and outmatched, there was little Linric could do to defend himself. Blows and kicks came from all directions and connected with Linric's body until he sank into ground, beaten to a bloody pulp. Satisfied, the bullies gloated for a minute and then turned to leave. However, Linric was not satisfied. For, a seething rage and frustration boiled inside him. If only he was stronger. If only he could defend himself. If only he could properly use a weapon. He would take anything. A sword, a mace, or even a stick would do! Then, a moment of clarity appeared. By looking inward, Linric could see the his ideal weapons. Countless shimmering blades in shades of blue, opal, and azure were stuck into the ground around him, waiting to be put to use. As Linric struggled to get up, he shouted at his attackers, "I'm not done with you yet!" They turned, replied with annoyed scowls, and then began walking towards Linric with clenched fists. As they approached, Linric reached behind to one of his imaginary blades and was surprised to feel warm steel within his hand. The blade lifted with ease and felt incredibly well-balanced. Brath decided to lead with a haymaker, but as soon as he threw the punch, Linric ducked and lunged past his side, dragging the blade along Brath's stomach. Linric and the rest of the bullies were shocked to see two things. The first surprise was the glowing, spectral sword in Linric's hand that seemed to be filled with light that wafted out of its edges. The second surprise was Brath, keeled over and clutching his belly with an agonizing expression. Linric did not get any trouble from Brath, Kajalt, Kiji or Pilart after that day, nor from anyone else for that matter. For the rest of his training, Linric honed his powers and his swordplay, often resorting to feints and other "less reputable tactics" to overcome his sparring partners. Despite their complaints, the elder Slayers did not expel Linric, for they and he agreed Linric had simply found a way to even the playing field with larger and stronger opponents. Soon, Linric passed his trials and was accepted into the Saylers, but only just. Just like in training, Linric was a black sheep among the Slayers, nearly all of whom were mistrustful of Linric's mysterious powers and disliked his unorthodox fighting style. This was not a surprise for Linric, especially since many of those people were his fellow training mates. He paid them no mind however, and soon became leader of a party of a few other Slayers, Bolin Firesong, Krag Boartooth, Torqus Broadside, and Avern Bronzebeard. As fellow misfits, they all became quick friends and in after a few weeks, set off on their first monster contract. Linric's first contract seemed like any other, simple, straight-forward, and small-paying. He and his party were tasked with riding to a village far past Mercle Fort to investigate and stop a scourge that was ambushing and slaughtering travelers and caravans in the village's surrounding forest. Linric and his party searched the woods for nearly a week, but the only clues they found were mangled corpses. Whatever this creature was, it seemed highly intelligent, cunning, and one step ahead of them. The party decided to fall back to the village to regroup and form a new plan. That night, however, as the party made its way through the winding trees, they were ambushed by the scourge itself. What happened next Linric remembers only as a bloody blur. One by one, Linric's companions were dispatched with brutal malice and ferocity. Soon, only Avern and Linric were left, bloodied but still standing. Linric then turned to Avern and ordered him to save himself while he held off the monster, so at least one of them would survive. Avern protested, for but after looking down at Linric's bleeding side and mangled left arm, he weeped and agreed to his orders. As Avern fled, Linric turned to face the beast, but it seemed to ignore him. Seemingly transfixed with prey that was presenting an opportunity for a chase, the creature leaped into the darkness after Avern with sadistic glee on its unfathomable face. Linric stood alone, watching helplessly as the night sky soon was filled with Avern's screams and the sickening sound of tearing flesh and bone. Linric spent the next three days playing cat and mouse with this forest scourge, hiding and creeping in the underbrush to escape the dreaded woods. Eventually, Linric returned to Kraggenhammen, but as a changed man. He spent of his trip home struggling with coming to terms with what happened that fateful night. As haunting as his memories are, he cannot seem to recall the monster that killed his friends in any detail, except for its voracious, cruel, and cold-blooded nature. It seems that memory has been repressed to the dark corners of his mind, for now... Linric has also come face to face with the widespread persecution non-humans face across Estalia. As one who hates bullies of any kind, Linric as taken it upon himself to protect those who cannot defend themselves with sabotage, robbing bigots, and more than a few blue blades. Upon returning home and telling the Slayers what happened, Linric was faced with plenty of ridicule and scorn. Many called him a coward for not dying alongside his friends. Some have even begun to spread rumours of him betraying his comrades to enable him to escape. As such, no one among the Slayers have been willing to team up with Linric for a contract since. Linric has also complained to some of the Slayers leadership saying that the Slayers should do more to protect non-humans from the Estalian's persecution, which has led to Linric butting heads with some of the Slayer's leaders, including Chief Rorek Granitehand! Yet, Linric still has some friends remaining, such as his family and contacts from within and outside Kraggenhammen who Linric helped in the past. Today, Linric is driven by many things. Firstly, he has vowed to overcome the trauma he received from his first contract and avenge his slain friends. Secondly, Linric wants to do all he can to protect fellow non-humans in Estalia. Thirdly, he desire to restore his family's name among to honorable standing amongst the Slayers. Furthermore, Linric still has no clue what the full extent of his powers are, how he got them, or why he received them in the first place. He wishes to solve all these things and many more, yet Linric also knows he cannot do it all alone. Additionally, since Linric lacks any allies within the Slayers who are willing to party with him, he now seeks a new band of friends who are willing to help him with his goals. Far from being selfish, however, Linric is happy to lend his powers and skill to any of his friends, should they need it.

I carry the dog-tags/trinkets of my fallen comrades and make sure I pray to them every night. Someone I loved died because of a mistake I made. That will never happen again.
