Nevaan

Nevaan is the current capital city of Caira, with a population of 98,650. The city is located on the south coast of Caira, and is part of a massive port system which connects 3 different settlements. Nevaan is the seat of power for Caira, seat of government, and is the location of the King of Caira.

Geography, Location & Climate

Nevaan is situated on the south of the Cairan coastline. The pebbly shore reached a mile out before it hits the sea, and the city sits on top of the grassy banks next to the shore. The nearby hot water springs have been used to generate hydroelectric power for the city, and provides a beautiful destination for tourism.

Demographics

The population of Nevaan consists of harmonids and centaurs. Centaurs that escaped after the Centaur Uprising sailed away on a fleet of boats north as far as they could. A few died on the journey from injuries, sea sickness, dehydration and giant leeches, but most made it to Caira. They took refuge in Nevaan, and they then began to live there as the original centaur population died out.

Quickly Nevaan became a popular city for refugee centaurs as word got out that they were living there. The centaurs that moved there didn't take to the temperatures and struggled until a few generations on when they adapted to the cold. Thousands of years later and centaurs had transformed so much they classified themselves as a new species, naming themselves "Frost Centaurs".

History

Origin

The Nevaans, a sub-tribe of the Cairans, explored the island of Caira almost 1.8 million years ago, when they travelled on boats from their home continent of the Region of Sarra. The large flowing river, the River Staa, was the foundation of the "Village of Nevaans", then shortened to Nevaan. After more settlements were constructed on the coastlines, the city was named the capital by the ruling governer, 2nd Karn.

Mage Era

Taking place between 60,000 years ago and 55,000 years ago, the mage era swept Greenerth and completely changed lifestyles for most. Frost magic was discovered in Caira, a type of powerful magic linked to the Earth element. It allowed harmonids to control the weather, control ice and snow, manipulate it as well as create it.

The Nevaans discovered this magic through a book hidden in the icy hills in the Cairan Desert. Nobody knows where the magical book came from, who put it there or why, but it has similarities and connections to the other books that were found around the world at exactly the same time.

The magical capabilities of the Nevaans gave them the ability to create better households than they already had, and passing information to other civilisations about different magic types meant they were granted access to new forms of magic they had never seen before. Nevaan was able to evolve faster than ever, and life seemed much easier than it previously was in the desolate wasteland. From the beginning to the end of the mage era, Nevaan had tripled in population from 16,400 to 49,200.

Technology Era

The technology era revolutionised Nevaan like it had never before. Despite Nevaan being one of the last settlements in Caira to have access to modern technology, they managed to push technology to its limits in only a few years. In 1205, miners in a mining network north of Nevaan mined up a large amount of thalassium, an element that can generate electricity during friction.

Nevaan scientists tested out many pre-established theories about electricity given they had limited access to it, and with the discovery of thalassium they could test them. Nevaan scientists created generators that made infinite electricity, which could power internal house heating, a necessity in the cold environments the settlement was built in. This pushed Nevaan to become the biggest and best city in Caira.

Infrastructure & Architecture

Houses in Nevaan are made of an insulating wood type, one of the only tree species that grows in the Cairan Desert. The houses don't exceed a few metres tall, because of the worry that fast winds could bring down houses, the winds exceeding a hundred miles an hour on a good day. Every house is equipped with a solar planter, absorbing solar energy to grow plants, which provide oxygen for the household with special oxygen plants, a plant that creates over triple the amount of oxygen a regular plant of its size does.

The houses in Nevaan never exceed a few metres tall, and are all bungalows. This is because of the strong winds that frequent the area, and the worry that the houses will topple over. The houses are built from stone but lined on the inside and out with insulating wood, that takes the little heat from the outside and brings it in, then trapping the heat. The roofs are almost flat, with a very slight A shape frame. Every house is equipped with an indoor firepit and a diagonal chimney that sticks out the side of the house, to generate heat if internal heating went out.

Assets, Industry & Trade

Nevaan has the world's largest stores of frost magic textbooks, as the original frost magic texts originated in Caira and was brought to Nevaan. Newly established mages wrote textbooks, scripts about frost magic, which were sold worldwide in return for other magic textbooks.

Nevaans trade insulating wood with other countries. The yellowwood trees that grow on Caira grow nowhere else on Greenerth, and Nevaan has taken over the entire yellowwood industry, building a special tree growing sanctuary west of the city on the coastline. The insulating wood is popular in the Frost Lands, Trecath and northern Aekor, so the business brings in millions of corral.

Defences

To the north of Nevaan is a large wall that extends from one outpost to another, that reaches about 6 miles. It completely covers the city and from the north side of the wall the city is invisible. This was built in the hopes to deter the unknown civilisation that lives in the Cairan Desert, as the Nevaans have never met them they are naturally afraid.

Tourism

Nevaan's cold climate attracts many tourists. A special location called the Nevaan Springs is a lake heated to high temperatures by underground magma chains redirected from a nearby volcano. The Nevaan Springs can attract upwards of 400 thousand visitors a year, which meant the springs needed to expand from its natural location and a new artificial spring was created, also called the Nevaan Spring. The temperatures heat up to 50℃, which is around the hottest temperature an average harmonid can handle.

Etymology

The name Nevaan comes from the Nevaans, a sub-tribe of Cairans who established the land and the settlement. The name originates from Cairinian, a language built within the time it took to travel from the east coast of Sarra to Caira. This was arguably one of the biggest feats of Cairans since it usually takes an incredibly long time to establish a fully functional language.
