Milky Way

Milky Way
The Milky Way is a barred spiral galaxy. Home to all known alien species and civilizations. Containing anywhere between 100-400 billion stars and equally as many planets and planetoids. At its center lies a supermassive black hole. Nobody goes there.   Despite 28% of the Galaxy being owned or declared as territory, only 4.5% of it has been charted and explored, with an average of 6 new planets discovered every year and with 1 new sentient species discovered every 2.3 years. These discoveries often occur within existing territorial bounds. Just because a region of space is owned does not mean it is fully explored or, in some cases, occupied. This often leads to disputes of ownership, especially when concerning hitherto unknown sovereign systems that have themselves drawn boundaries.   The civilizations spanning the galaxy are varied, and are able to traverse it with faster-than-light travel. It is mostly divided between two great factions: the Allied Galactic Federation and Pirate Coalition, as well as a few isolationist sovereign governments.

The Pirate territories are the lawless regions of space, filled with barbaric monarchies, anarchistic frontier worlds, and crime syndicates. Regional authority can be found in the System Lords, who enjoy the freedom to govern their planets and solar systems in their Criminal Empire as they wish. At the summit of this house of cards is the High Table, twelve of the most powerful System Lords who more or less rule the Pirate Territories and set the rules of engagement.   Allied Space, by contrast, is organized and With representative government found in the Allied Senate, and supreme authority in the Prime Council, which is made up of the founding species of the Allied Galactica.   There have been known to be neutral systems, but they don't stay that way for long. Soon after discovery, they are either claimed by the System Lords, becoming another pirate territory, or join the Allied Galactica with the promise of protection from the System Lords and the various other benefits of allyship. Many systems that refuse membership with the Allied Galactica accept it again in a few short generations. Those that don't fall into disarray and collapse. Billions die as their civilization regresses without aid as they slip into extinction, and what's left of them is poached by Pirates.   Sovereign systems are recognized as independent worlds or solar systems, and they share tensions with Pirate and Allied space. Usually, they exhibit formidable defensive capabilities and weapons of planetary destruction. Making colonization a destructive affair for any side. Alternatively, the usual pressure from Allied or Pirate space to join them can encourage a Sovereign system to consider allegiance with the opposition or, in some cases, other sovereign systems. Leading to a standstill. Most are isolationist; others maintain practical relations with one side or the other without participating in their affairs.

Dangers

The Galaxy is full of dangers. It's full of everything. It's a Galaxy.   Every threat imaginable: carnivorous animals, blunt instruments, hanging ropes, food allergies, amusement park rides with faulty rails, sharp cutlery, lakes, lakes of acid, lakes of sharp cutlery, objects smaller than a child's esophagus, objects bigger than a child's esophagus, guns, knives, guuxjadohas, boards with nails in them, etc.   But exclusive to the vastness of space are Exotic phenomena that can extend from one cluster to another, such as black holes, cosmic radiation, hurtling asteroids, the vacuum of space, and supernovas. Traveling from one system or another, there are threats such as Pirates, slavers, corrupt Allied patrols, crossing the bounds of a draconian Sovereign system, exotic diseases, carnivorous aliens, xeno-cryptids, uncharted dominions, anomalies, deadly lifeforms, stray missiles or other payload, replicons, and star debris.

Though full of infinite possibilities, all interstellar travel comes with a great deal of risk. Safety is not guaranteed, and all promises of it are an illusion.
