Civilization and Culture
Naming Traditions
Dwarves never had surnames under the New Abrizan Empire, so after the Empire fell, they made up their own. As a result, many of their surnames are a combination of a noun and an adjective, typically a nickname of the family's originator. Sometimes, a dwarf will create a new surname for themselves. This will usually only occur in the case of orphans or those who are disowned, but occasionally a dwarf who achieves some great accomplishment will take a new name based on that accomplishment. In these cases, they either add it to their existing name or simply replace their original surname. The second option often causes tension between them and their family, especially if they are an only child.
In regard to social propriety, there are differing unwritten rules regarding the creation of a new surname depending upon the circumstances:
- If you already have a surname, and you are adding to your name, the name must be based upon a magnificent achievement.
- If you already have a surname, and you are replacing it, the achievement it is based upon can be less impressive than for adding a name but must still be significant. In addition, it is generally seen as quite disrespectful to your family, especially if you are an only child. The requirements and negative reactions are lessened significantly if your original name is embarrassing.
- If you have been disowned or are an orphan, names that are of purely personal significance rather than being based on an impressive achievement are acceptable. It is not uncommon in these situations for a nickname to become a surname.
Gender Ideals
Dwarves generally pay no heed to gender outside of courtship.
Courtship Ideals
During the time of the New Abrizan Empire, courtship between dwarves was prohibited unless specifically ordered by their mine's assigned doctor. In these cases, the "courtship" consisted of a few hours' conversation, mostly intended to allow the two chosen dwarves to mentally prepare themselves before intercourse. Afterwards, the two would separate and go on as they had beforehand.
Today's expectations for courtship among dwarves has been significantly influenced by this system, being basically the opposite. Courtship between dwarves takes seven months at minimum before a relationship is generally considered to be serious, and at least two years must pass before considering marriage.
Marriage is extremely important among dwarves, to the point that it makes marriages among many other races appear almost casual. Divorce is completely unacceptable for any reason short of a major betrayal. Divorcing for any other reason is a quick way to become a pariah (and is illegal in the Wrisresite Magocracy).
In the event of a spouse's death, it is expected to undergo a mourning period of at least six years, during which time it is socially unacceptable to pursue any courtship. Knowingly attempting to court someone during their mourning period is considered incredibly shameful, often resulting in the offender's family disowning them. It is also not unheard of for those who do this to be murdered by a family member of the mourner. While this is no less illegal than any other murder, dwarven authorities are typically less enthusiastic about investigating these cases, and often "misplace" crucial evidence.
Average Technological Level
Dwarves have the most advanced magical technology in the world. Their other technology tends to be somewhat archaic.
Culture and Cultural Heritage
During the reign of Kalamzaresh, before Magical Conduits were invented, most non-dragons capable of using magic safely were dwarves. Because of this, dwarven culture has the most emphasis on magic in the modern day, and dwarves are responsible for most major advances in magical technology, such as Conduits.
History
Dwarves were originally created by mages in the service of Kalamzaresh. He wanted a species similar to humans, but more suited for living and working in mines. Most dwarves lived their entire lives in mines until Kalamzaresh was overthrown. Because of this, most dwarves hate the idea of living underground.
