New Abrizan Empire

Structure

The New Abrizan Empire was ruled by the Emperor, Kalamzaresh. The nobility of the Empire was entirely Dragons. The rarer a dragon's color, the higher rank they were among the nobility. Kalamzaresh was the only known Gold Dragon in the Empire.

History

In 748, Kalamzaresh and his followers invaded Zelunica. At the time, Zelunica was ruled by the Zelunii Empire. The Zelunii were caught off-guard by Kalamzaresh, and had no weapons intended for fighting dragons. Within two years, the war was over. Many of their cities had been razed, and the ones that weren't were put under the control of Kalamzaresh's favorite followers. Soon afterwards, Kalamzaresh ordered the construction of the Old Capital. Thus began the New Abrizan Empire.   In the first few years of the Empire, there were a few small groups of people that kept resisting Kalamzaresh, but they didn't manage to do much before they were killed.   After the last of the Zelunii resistance was subdued, Kalamzaresh instituted Draconic as the official language of the Empire.   Kalamzaresh was a tyrant, to a worse extent than any other on the continent in the time since. He was known for terrible acts of retribution for the slightest insult, once burning an entire village because of the disparaging remarks of a single child. For a long time, he ruled without much incident, only a few minor rebellions that were easily crushed.

Disbandment

In 1230, a group of mages formed an organization that they called the Circle of Mages. This Circle was created to overthrow Kalamzaresh's Empire. They spent much of their time recruiting and training soldiers and spies, and trying to devise ways to kill dragons. Eventually, they developed a poison called Dragonbane. They created Injection Weapons to administer the poison, but realized that they couldn't get close enough to Kalamzaresh to use one on him. Eventually, desperation got the better of them, as they had come perilously close to being discovered a number of times, and they decided to release the poison in a cloud in the capital. Multiple magical bombs were planted at various points in the city, intended to create a wall of the cloud around the perimeter of the city, preventing escape. After the bombs were planted, the mages went to their ritual chamber and prepared a large spell, a combination of a teleportation spell for the poison, a bomb to disperse it across the city, and several wards and counterspells to ensure its success. They set off the perimeter bombs, then cast their spell.   The plan worked, and no living thing in the city survived. Unfortunately, unbeknownst to the Circle, Kalamzaresh was a lich, so he didn't die. However, the Dragonbane did manage to incapacitate him, and he was believed him to be dead. Afterwards, the mages and their soldiers took their injection spears and the rest of the poison, and set off to hunt down the remainder of the dragons, who had largely grown complacent in their years of total superiority.   Midway through the war, many of the non-dragons in the empire, emboldened by the apparent death of Kalamzaresh, started to believe they could actually have a chance at winning if they fought, and many of them flocked to these mages to join their fight. In the ensuing war, many non-dragons killed any Dragon or Draconian they could. Eventually, the non-dragons won, although most of the original Circle of Mages had died, along with countless non-dragons.

Demography and Population

The New Abrizan Empire contained Dragons, who were the nobility, Draconians, who were the middle class, and mostly free to pursue whatever work they chose, as long as it wasn't too far beneath them, Humans and Eoten, who were farm workers, woodcutters, and crafters, among other things, Dwarves, who were mine workers, Gryphons, who mostly worked in hunting and transportation, Aranea, who were tailors and textile makers, and Harpies who worked in a variety of fields, primarily transportation and hunting. Goblins and Aemet were in Zelunica at the time, but the Empire couldn't locate them.

Territories

The New Abrizan Empire occupied all of Zelunica.

Military

The Empire's military was made up of entirely Draconians. All Imperial soldiers were trained with crossbow, spear, and sword, and carried all three while on duty. Unlike most modern militaries, there was no separation of ranged and melee infantry. Instead, infantry was divided into two regiments: ground and air. The Empire didn't employ cavalry. The Imperial military had two mage regiments, one focusing on offensive magic and the other focusing on defensive magic. The offensive regiment was much larger than the defensive regiment.

Foreign Relations

The New Abrizan Empire was neutral to the countries of Andaren, and hostile to Abrizan.

Agriculture & Industry

Farms

The farms of the New Abrizan Empire were worked mostly by Humans and Eoten. These workers generally lived in barracks at the farms they worked at. Each farm typically had a Draconian overseer, with a small retinue of Draconian soldiers.

Mines

Workers
The mines of the New Abrizan Empire were worked by Dwarves, who were created by the Empire specifically for working in mines. The conditions in these mines were unpleasant, but not usually bad enough to be fatal. Food rations for the workers were simple and typically didn't taste very good, but provided all of the basic nutrition required by Dwarves. These mines had a much lower mortality rate than many people assume, since there was effort put in to keeping workers alive and healthy. When a Dwarf did die, they were reanimated as a Ghoul, or occasionally a Geholod, which would then serve as a guard for the mine. The mine workers were not permitted to ever leave the mine. The mine entrances were locked at all times, except for pickups, deliveries, and the occasional visit from Imperial officials.   Administration
Each mine had an overseer, a small retinue of soldiers, and a doctor, all Draconians, who lived in a small castle just outside of the mine. The only standardized design feature on these castles was that they all contained the entrance to the mine, which was always located in the lowest level of the castle. The duties of the overseer included: distributing rations, keeping the workers in line, and sending fortnightly reports to the lord of the nearest city. The soldiers were mostly there to prevent the workers from escaping, since very few people ever tried to get into one of the Empire's mines. The doctor was tasked with keeping the overseer, soldiers, and workers healthy, as well as assigning breeding partners among the dwarves. Particularly large mines sometimes had more than one doctor. The administrative staff of a mine received food rations that were separate from those that went to the workers, with food that was not extravagant, but was of much higher variety and quality than the workers' rations.

Education

Education was mandatory in the New Abrizan Empire.   Dragons and Draconians were educated in schools run by the nobility, and learned a variety of subjects including: mathematics, history, literacy, and first aid, among other things. These schools also taught Magic. Any Dragon could learn how to use Magic, but Draconians required permission from a member of the nobility. People typically stayed in these schools from the age of twelve to the age of fifteen. These schools also offered optional training for most occupations that Draconians were likely to be interested in, which lasted one year after a student would normally leave.   Non-dragons were educated in schools run by Draconian teachers. Students entered these schools at age ten. These schools taught general skills for two years, after which the teachers assigned occupations to the students, who were taught for three more years in skills related to their occupations. Non-dragons whose occupation was decided entirely by their race, such as Aranea or Dwarves, were educated in separate schools for only three years, starting at age twelve.

Infrastructure

The Empire's roads were quite well-maintained.

After the Zelunii Empire fell, Kalamzaresh replaced the currency with his own coins, which were shaped like his head and neck. Because these coins were manufactured with magic, they appeared quite lifelike, and some more superstitious people believed that Kalamzaresh could see through the eyes of the coins.
